Child protection is ok so far, but this Package is not protective, it’s simply stupid.

It seems to be the norm now to package things in such a ridiculous way. I have actually damaged items through the attempt of taking them out of such package. Its pretty sad such as when giving a child a toy and one has to get cutting tools and actually screw drivers sometimes to remove it out of package. I just cannot see the reasoning behind it. Amazon actually offers many items in "frustration free packaging".

They didn't do that before they had people stealing out of packages at the store. Same goes for child toys!!

That quote reminded me of an old carpenter that I worked under when I was learning to do finish work.   He went through five packs of Camels every day.  Lit the next one off of the last one.........

In the UK, if the law catch you carrying a knife, you stand a good chance of ending up in court!  .

So did I, almost all the boys had one in their pocket, (probably some of the girls too) no one bothered, but that was 50/60 years ago! How times have changed!

Oh no! You have found my hobby horse, the subject I will never tire of talking about... knife carrying.

When I was at junior school I was given my first swiss army knife, I carried it all through school and never stabbed anyone.

When I joined the police, I carried a knife of some description every day of duty for 30 years despite it being seen as unnecessary by the gaffers. I never stabbed anyone.

I am very rarely ever without a pocket knife no matter where I go, only times I cant carry one is when going on a plane. I never stabbed anyone.

My point is, knives do not hurt people, people do. 

If you look at it mans first tool was the rock he used to bash something on the head for dinner, his second tool was something to cut it up with. A knife is a fundamental and legitimate tool for a creature with pretty limited teeth and claws. 

UK laws have been tightened over the years by overzealous and ignorant people who see banning things as the only way to address them. I'm an advocate of legal knife ownership and carrying, and education in the responsible use and ownership of knives. If kids were taught rather than being scared half to death maybe we would have responsible owners. If kids were taught knives are dangerous if used wrongly and that dead means dead, not that you can get shot or stabbed and jump back up like they do on TV then maybe we would have fewer murders.

By law we are allowed to carry a folding bladed pocket knife with a blade 3 inches or less. Still more than capable of injuring or killing someone. But most murders are carried out with kitchen knives, snatched up in the heat of the moment during arguments, or carried for the visual impact of a big shiny blade. 

I'll stop now, I'm getting on my soap box lol.

I totally agree with you Mick.

 

As a sailor I always have a knife on me, and I hate to think how many times I have wandered up the road in port to grab something and forgotten about the knife in a sheath on my hip! I have also never felt the need to stab anybody and consider the knife an essential tool of my trade. If you really want to murder somebody it would take a few seconds to find anything suitable laying about - a rock, brick, stick etc.

 

We live in such a nanny society its ridiculous - I dont miss a lot about the old days, except the common sense we were allowed to use.

 

On the ship we have a  "safety training hub" on the computer system. We all have been allocated so many online courses to do in our free time to make us safer workers, they come with a half hour video then some multi choice questions afterwards. I did one on angle grinder safety the other day as I was bored, I never waste my time watching the video and now that I have passed this nonsense I am deemed "safer". Im sorry, but you cant find out how to use an angle grinder by answering 10 questions and watching a **** video with a porno soundtrack. You pick it up and use the damn thing - but the office are happy as apparently all my years of using these things prior to the course wasnt good enough. I also had to do a forklift licence the other day, depsite having driven them for 20 + years all over the world. The instructor was a great guy, but there is no way you can use a forklift in the real world how they teach you on the course - it would take an hour to unload a truck that you could do in 10 minutes using common sense.

Oh yeah what was this post about.....packaging! Surely the environmental impact has to be considered with this ridiculous amount of plastic wrapped around everything? That would be a law worth changing.

Ive never been stopped and searched because I never look.like a thug carrying a knife.

We are just heading into town to do the monthly shop, the amount of unnecessary packaging we will have to discard is ridiculous. 

 

What worries me more is the tiny percentage of us that actually care about these things. Most people don't give it a second thought - the same people that happy throw rubbish out a car window or have a picnic and leave all the rubbish laying about.
