John2189 462 #1 Posted June 25, 2020 Where is the gas tank supposed to be on a 656 tractor? Mine doesn’t look right where it is now. The battery is under the hood.

I'm thinking that the battery should still be mounted on the frame beside the engine @bottjernat1 Your 856 is a Kohler engine. A 656 is a techy.

Mine has a 12 techumseh so there is no room for the battery on the frame. They put it where the gas tank should be and a smaller tank on the frame. Only problem with this is that the vacuum fuel pump loses prime thanks

I didn't notice you had a big block in there when I answered. 656 would have had a 6 horse. Couple different ways you could go. Either install an electric fuel pump which would take the concern out of losing prime, or put a gas tank up where it should be and move the battery ... under the seat pan. Didn’t think about moving it under the seat. If the battery will fit.

I've not tried it myself but I've seen it done. @VinsRJ Vin is one of our members in Connecticut that has his own YouTube channel. He has a similar vintage tractor that he's been working on and has put the battery under the seat. He has some great videos that describe what he did or if he had any fit challenges. I don't know if Vin brings it up in his videos or not but the only thing that comes to mind right away is to make very sure that your positive cable is 4 gauge instead of the stock 8 or 6. The extra distance is probably not a huge concern but bigger is better where electricity travels.
