echris 1,425 #1 Posted June 24, 2020 (edited) About 20 years ago or so, I got a 10" F.E. Reed and Company engine lathe from my brother. She's old. Really old. But she's has less wear than many much newer machines I've seen. Look at the condition of the ways, right under the chuck! When I first got her, I didn't not have a chuck key, so I used a good old trusty Swagelok wrench. Kinda of a pain in the butt, so I used my lathe to make a tool for my lathe. Nothing fancy, but I did add a set screw to the shaft. I didn't have the correct one so I cut the head off a 6/32 and file a slot in it. Ground the end of the shank square And epoxied a spare socket onto the end. Love this old girl! NEVER leave your chuck key in your chuck. I know. It's for the paparazzi! I hope you guys enjoy ancient machines as much as I do. They JUST WORK. Edited June 24, 2020 by echris 7 3
JAinVA 4,623 #3 Posted June 24, 2020 (edited) I know its just for the pictures but the machinist in me cringes at the sight of the chuck wrench left in the chuck. The last time i saw that the apprentice turned on the lathe before I could get to him I could live a life time and be happy without seeing that again. WHX?? 49,193 #4 Posted June 24, 2020 Agreed JA ... this is why they invented spring loaded Jacobs chuck keys. 1
8ntruck 7,113 #5 Posted June 24, 2020 I have been a mentor for the local high school robotics team for the last few years. Seems like I end up warning several students every year about leaving the key in the chuck - multiple times. A couple had to learn the hard way. Fortunately, no injuries. 2
CCW 1,300 #6 Posted June 24, 2020 I always hated spring loaded chuck keys, but completely understand the need. Nice machine. I have an old Oliver band saw, but I think I am going to sell it. Need the room in the shop and not a lot of need for it.

I know what you mean. I'm a real stickler about this. This pic may be the only time I've done that and it was removed immediately after! See the board with the lathe tooling behind the lathe, there's an empty hole on the lower left. That's for the chuck key.

Those Deckel's mills are beautiful. My neighbor Dave has one he recently restored. A bit older than yours I believe. What a fantastic machine. 2

Just take a few boxes off the top of her and take a few pics, dirt and all. We get it.
