squonk 41,324 #1 Posted June 22, 2020 1965 Hydrogear. Oil filter looks like it was installed when Cecil Pond was just a glint in his father's eye. Oil looks clean & red. I want to just change the filter and top off for now. I'll I can find Is Dexron VI / Mercon LV. It says it's fully backward compatible. Has anyone tried this with bad results? You can't find regular atf. It's Dexron Vi or Mercon LV or the combination of them

JoeM 7,874 #8 Posted June 22, 2020 Most all oil manufactured have a question phone line that you can call. I have used this service in the past at work and they answered my compatibility questions right then and there. Might be worth a try
rmaynard 15,602 #9 Posted June 22, 2020 (edited) I replaced the fluid in my 875 last summer. Since Type-A was called for but was not to be found, Wolf's Head Super Universal fully synthetic transmission fluid was recommended as a suitable replacement. What I found is that; 1. It stinks like rotten fish. 2. It does NOT perform as good as the old red type-A I'm going to drain it again and refill with Wolf's Head hoping that I may not have gotten all the old stuff out, or that I may have some air in the system. Looking back, I wish I could find Type-A Edited June 22, 2020 by rmaynard
squonk 41,324 #10 Posted June 23, 2020 The type FA is the oldest designation I can find for these older transmissions. For all I know it's the same as the Dex Merc that Eric posted. If I was changing all the oil I wouldn't be so paranoid about it. FA has the "A" in it so that's what I'm going to use.

They showed like 5 bottles on my computer but they only showed 1 on theirs. He says lets see if I can find it. He does find it and puts it on the counter. The bottle says Type F. Nothing about A nothing about GM specs NOTHING! It shows up on line as FA, My Napa Prolink shows it as FA but it's F . Now I'm thinking this bottle was probably on the shelf since I worked there 18 years ago. I googled just Napa type F and nothing shows up at all. So to be safe I used the generic non synthetic Napa 75-200 Dexron Mercon that Eric posted. Once Corona is finally over and I can prowl the store, I'm going to look for a new bottle and see if it's FA. Edited June 23, 2020 by squonk
tractormandash 5 #13 Posted October 4, 2020 AC Delco type III H fluid is a direct replacement for type A automatic transmission fluid. Along with a 416h WH I own a 1967 Ford 120 hydro Garden Tractor that has a sundstrand hydro transmission similar to the ones used in Wheel horse units that calls for type A transmission fluid. I haven't run it but if you google it the description says used where a type A automatic transmission fluid is recommended. I currently run Napa standard dex/merc with no issues. The delco fluid is readily available at least in my area. 1
