Bill D 1,907 #54 Posted June 24, 2020 Pull the valves. Clean them with a wire wheel, lap them and reinstall. I think a valve is hanging up at low speed. Bill 2

Bill Taking your advice, going to try to do that today.....I have a new head gasket, and it should be an easy job. Hood is off, carb is off.... thanks Bill !
RandyLittrell 3,877 #56 Posted June 24, 2020 I understand your frustration, but it sounds like this tractor just pushes snow which is at full throttle anyway. If it runs good and doesn't get hot or anything, what would be the point of replacing an engine over it. I have more cheapskate in me than OCD! The valve hanging at low rpm's sound possible. johnnymag3 2,515 #57 Posted June 24, 2020 This guy does not run full throttle to plow, he eases into everything....so fussy where the snow goes...etc. Its very annoying to have to use full throttle, and me and my OCD wont give this guy a tractor back thats not 100 PERCENT ! There has to be a simple thing to be happening, but Ive never had this situation in over 40 years !! Going to dig in to it soon, after dinner......... Thank you everyone, and keep the ideas a comi'n !!!

I hope it's solution comes up. Just as a point of interest about the RPM speed on these engines. It's important to remember that they are air-cooled and do not have a pressure oiling system. They are dependent on the crankshaft spinning to sling the oil around internally. Kohler as a company recommends running them at full throttle when under any kind of a load. I don't necessarily subscribe to that exactly but I NEVER run an engine on any tractor at less than half throttle while the machine is moving. A moving tractor is literally considered "under load." A hydro or automatic tractor in particular should never run below 3/4 or full throttle when moving because the transmission has a fan that needs to be moving air and fluid to keep that hydraulic pump cool.

Your engine is carbonated - coked up. The vacuum gauge would have pointed you in this direction and saved you hours of frustration. Exhaust valve hanging up in the guide, possibly coated with un-burnt carbon on the valve head. Clean the valve and guide free of carbon then inform your fussy guy not to spare the horse's.
