312-8 climbs up but rolls down hill

Recommended Posts

“I had my wife video me going down the hill. It does look like one tire is spinning the opposite direction of the other. This happens shortly after it starts to accelerate forward down the hill.“

That is exactly how my 310-8 behaves on the steepest part of my yard.  And my experience is the quickest way to gain control is to not clutch or brake, just let the tractor regain traction.

The one tire spinning the opposite direction comment made me think of that. Dunno of that makes sense though.

I thought this was a byproduct of the wheelhorse differential to aid in gaining traction when one wheel starts to slip.

I have seen where people will weld up the differential gears to "lock" it, but I don't think I want to do that.

Liquid filled rear tires or wheel weights will give you more traction and greater overall stability. The counter-rotation of one tire is normal when you have lost traction.

You need weights on that hill. I don't care what tractor is on it. If 1 tire starts to skid the differential will ratchet and cause all kinds of loosey goosey reactions

Yes, that's the behavior of all of mine. Those are up-hill only for me until I get more weight back there.

I ordered some BKT Trencher  23x10.50-12 tires. Now i need to get about 14 gallons of washer fluid. I did score some headlight bezels at the tractor junkyard, so that was worth the trip.

I got the trenchers loaded with fluid and mounted today. She stayed planted on the hill for the first descent. On the second, it popped out of gear and went for a wild ride about halfway down. Luckily,  i was able to steer out of it and avoid the ditch and neighbors house. On the third try, i held the gear shifter in place as a precaution and had no issues.  I may still add wheel weights as a precaution.

Nice looking tractor and glad you got it sorted out.

The thread got side tracked early on when tire traction was ruled out.  Hopefully one of the stick shift guys can help with the gear shift issue.  Don't forget to re-level the mower deck with the new tires.

file is too big to upload.

Post it to Youtube and then link that to your post.

I took a ride like that a couple years back when an axle broke.

I shortened the video and it was under the max file size. Hopefully it is showing up. Still hard to tell how steep the hill is, but you can see how quickly it speeds up. Probably a good thing that the tie rod popped off earlier and was tightened up, or this could have ended badly.

Out of curiosity, were you in hi or low range? Not sure if that will make a difference, just trying to gather more info for the experts.

I was in low 2. That seemed to be close to how fast my 211 is in 1st (no hi/lo).

I have since tried hi 2 and no issues with either  It may just not have been fully engaged and dislodged when I hit a bump

I bet the weight of the loaded tires helped with the cornering, lower center of gravity.

I think im still going to get wheel weights.  I would  also like to get a low-back seat. I have one on the 211 and it allows me to lean back and put more weight over the wheels.
