C120 motor swap? Maybe?

Hello everyone,

 

I recently purchased a C120 8-Speed, that I have fallen in love with. Ripped the motor out to do a rebuild just because, but while shopping for parts I found a 48" deck. I have 5 acres that needs mowing and I would appreciate the extra width.

 

Would my K301 be able to handle the 48" deck? 

 

And if not, what motors are easily swappable?

 

Are there any other K series motors that would line up with the existing bolt holes? Or easily with an adapter plate?

 

I'm eyeing a 341 on Ebay.

I'm thinking the 12 horse should be able to handle that.

 

Unless you know the K341 came from a Horse it may be the wrong spec.

 

You could also keep 2 tractors.

 

Rebuild the 120 as you've been and add a second more powerful model if so desired.

It depends on the density of the grass and its height.The little grass I cut is sparse so a 48" on a 12horse would not be a problem.The c120 I got used over 30 years ago came from the local WH dealer and he would not sell a 48" and 12hp combo.

Well lets say it did come come from a horse, is it even a possibility it may fit?

 

And I'm definitely going to rebuild the 120 no matter what. Thank you!

A 341 will fit where a 12 horse lives.

No issue.

 

C120 and a C160 use the same frame/sheet metal etc.

By the time you buy the engine and the deck I think you can get a complete tractor. I just recently purchased a 416-8 with a 48 inch deck for about what you would pay for an engine and a deck. 2 Horses are better then 1 is the standard answer you will find here.

Speed or power... that’s the balance... you can cut all day long with the 12 hp, just may need to drop a gear... (added advantage? More seat time!)

 

I mow with a 10 hp no issues. I have gone through 3’ high stuff without a problem - just slowly...

Unless you KNOW that the K-341 is in good condition I would go with @D_Mac and just look around  with a deck. Too many so called "GOOD RUNNING" engines being sold are not what the seller claims they are. Also, there are small block (on a shaker plate) and big block (bolted directly to the frame) engines. Unless the base is the same there will need to be some fabrication done.

and the property itself - primarily level or includes a fair amount of hill / incline 

 

 

5 acres of grass is a lot of grass to cut and especially for 12 hp - so that's one strike 

 

if property is hilly and grass is often high - that's two more strikes 

 

a larger single or twin with a hydro (or zero turn) better suited to cutting large amount of grass - but if property is mostly level and grass not too high you can prob cut all day with a smile on your face with  a 12 manual 

 

and maybe even use 3rd gear in many areas if ground is relatively smooth 

 

( hydro can be a huge plus when cutting large amount of grass - can cut at a speed between the speed of a manual 2nd and 3rd gear )

42 and 48 are no different as far as being driven. It's the amount of grass being cut like is being said. If it were up to me, I'd get some gang mower setup in place and drag it across those 5 acres. That, or a zero turn.
