peter lena 8,721 #1 Posted June 20, 2020 hello, just picked up a weather beaten 3-14-8 ,with 434 hrs on it , initial look is rough but saveable, this is a toro model # 73400 , serial # 5901451, the shifter lever is very loose and has little function , from what i can find it seams that the detent ball set up is gone . but i am also reading that its no big deal to replace. anyone had a similar experience and a cure? thank you for any response , pete
ebinmaine 68,345 #2 Posted June 20, 2020 Detent ball on the end of the shifter or the dog point set screw?
oliver2-44 9,860 #3 Posted June 20, 2020 As EB mentioned start with checking the adjustment of the dog point set screw that holds the shifter in place. Under the rubber booth there is a small nut that locks the det screw. Adjust the set screw to where it is snug on the shifter shaft, that back it off a little so the shifter wil shift, but not be sloppy.
peter lena 8,721 #4 Posted June 20, 2020 i would say dog point set screw, its so sloppy i wonder if it will pick up the adjustment , pete
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #5 Posted June 20, 2020 When you have the shifter out check to see if the donut is welded to the shifter or pinned. The pin can shear and allow the shifter to rotate rather then slide the shift rails. Garry 1
