Tiller - A Question of Connection

Recommended Posts

Mike C160

Can anyone tell me where the cable is to attach to this tiller? A or B? The previous owner said B. But I dont see any paint removed from that area and I dont have the cable, I have to make one up.

Any help you can give is appreciated.

Cheers

Not sure but I'm thinking B is for a helper spring.

You are absolutely right. I found a photo of the set up.

Now the question is what does the spring do? Helps the cable lift the unit? Helps the unit stay down? Or helps the unit "Float" in set position?

I dont have this spring sadly, so now I have to figure something out.

The spring helps lift the tiller. This Spring whille tilling the garden I struggled to lift the tiller until i realized I didn't have enough tension on the spring. The hydros don't need the spring but I don't use them to till with.

How much weight does the spring remove from the tiller while tilling? Does it affect your till depth? I figure it must.

I don't have the spring on mine, and it picks it up pretty easily. MUCH easier than lifting a snow blower.....

Are you using the factory cable or one you made up?

Factory setup. Rototillers are heavy, but I don't think its heavier than the snow blower.....

Keep in mind that  some of the snow blower flags have provision for an assist spring.I only run the blower on a hydro so lift is not an issue. The depth is not affected by the spring in my judgement. The gear case on the tiller has a greater control over depth.

Its probably been ten years since I set up my tillers. I have two. If I remember right the lift arm has a chain looped on it, to pull the shackle on the cable. Seems there were three teeth in that lift arm to give you a different leverage ratio to lift. Lowest lift

was the easiest , longest lift the hardest. I'm a big boy and went with the the longest . Maybe that would help you, to check and put the chain link on the tooth closest to the pivot shaft of the lift arm. Hope this helps.

Maybe thats backwards , and the chain hooks to the tiller and the shackle loops over the lift arm.

Either way there were options as I recall .

The picture above shows the spring and cable perfectly. I crank mine fully so it provides maximum help in lifting, with no affect on tilling depth.
