Crazy New modifications / improvements for my Horse

Going in a different direction with this one....What are your plans to upgrade, change, repair / replace on your beloved Wheel Horse Tractor.

 

This is going to be fun  …. AND EXPENSIVE

Working on my Commando 8. Putting in a new motor (another 8hp), working on re-wiring it, swapping in an 8-speed. Nothing too crazy.

 

Love the patina I have, but may try to bring it i back a little with the steel-wool / paste wax trick.

Here's a link to the thread. I started it last September and just haven't been taking the time to work on it anywhere near as often as I would like to.

Turns out my business actually got more busy during the shutdown instead of... Shutting down. But that's okay.

 

You can read the first two or three pages to get a good idea of what I'm after. Or take the time to try to absorb all the banter that's in there.

 

The sheet metal will be Apple Red. So there's some red on there....

I have access to a 3 cyl. Geo Metro engine,,,,its not much bigger or wider than the engine bay on a 4 series tractor....have access to a roller also, no wiring

Back around 1998 or 1999 I was working at a GM dealership. Those three cylinder Geo engines were very very dependable at the time. Nearly zero warranty issues.

We did have ONE go bad in the couple years I was there. We ordered the replacement and it turned out to be a cylinder head and a long block and it came in two different boxes... On UPS. You could pick them up and walk around just like it was any other thing. Tiny little engine.

I would really like to build a big wheel, round hood, row crop tractor. I think that would be pretty awesome. Probably won't ever do it though (time, space, money).

“Frank” is quite similar.  I imagine with an 8 speed or 3 speed even, things would have been much easier.

Trying to figure out how to power the drivetrain, how to orient the mill, without a weird looking machine

 

Metro engine meets Wheelhorse......part one coming soon. Have to check on roller and if its still sitting in briar bush.!!!!

The biggest problem with those engines is you have to drive them like a light switch wide open or off to get any power out.

Drove a Metro once...as a rental. It was quite nice, a wee bit tight...but had plenty of power to move the 1600 lb. vehicle. I never had to mash the pedal to the floor. I think it would move a 600 Lb. tractor ??

I imagine they have more horsepower near idle than an Onan at WOT...

A number of years ago at the Buick GS Nationals, I saw a Metro with one of the Buick 3800 turbo charged engines in it.  Wasn't running very well that weekend, but it looked like it could be a hand full when the boost came up!

 

Remember, the D series could be ordered with a 4 cylinder Renualt engine.  Might look there for inspiration

Sounds correct, i meant the Engine Code from GM.

0,9L 54PS  3 Cylindre Engine with Valvesteering via chain.

i dunno the chevy Metro, but it seems that’s the Car here sold under Opel Corsa B

thinking the same Engine we‘re talking about.

 

They have a wide usable speedband, 

but best torque band is from 1750 up to 3480 RPM

below there is not much torque, above the torque nearly stalls.

 

the injection system is here coupled with a Transponder for theft protect, i think the same on your site.

So if you like to use this Engine, you need the Engine Control Unit, what is on the Engine side mounted,

the Transponder engine with Antenna (marriaged together with ECU) and a Wireharness for the lambda sensor. Otherwise that engine will just fireup for 3 sec. Than it stalls.

 

Or you wanna built a complete own ECU yourself.

Remember, adding horsepower , means that you will be stressing the transmission and differential beyond the original design intent.

 

Hot Rodding rules apply here:  Hop up the engine, the tires spin.  Bigger tires solve tire spin, but now u joints break.  Bigger u joints, then differential goes bang...........
