cafoose 3,355 #1 Posted June 14, 2020 Here is a thread describing the problem with the hydro on my GT-14 that I just got running: I pulled the tranny from my parts GT-14 and could not get the drain plug loose. What is the best way to get it out? I flipped it upside down and removed the fill plug to drain it. Here is the fluid I got out. It's definitely ATF. It looks dark in the pan. The picture must be reflecting the cover on my Harbor Freight garage making it look light colored. I sprayed Kroil on the drain plug to soak for awhile. I'm thinking of using the pump and hydro assembly from the old tractor and the diff from the parts tractor since the case is leaking on the good tractor and the pump and hydro doesn't look good on the parts tractor. It looks like someone had the hydro separated from the diff on the parts tractor because there is gasket sealer at the joint between them. I got the parts tractor at an auction and it was sitting in a field outside for a number of years. The engine in it broke a rod through the block. I'm thinking that's why they parted it. I have no idea of the condition of the tranny on either tractor. Any thoughts, ideas on what I should do next? @pfrederi @daveoman1966 @953 nut? I've never had a hydro apart before but I have the manual and I'm very good with mechanics. The last four pictures are of the good tractor and the others are from the parts tractor.

Once it is apart and the ATF residue is gone you could warm the case up and apply some paraffin wax to the threads or drill it out with progressively larger bits. the heat from drilling could free it up once you get near the edge. I know Paul has a test bench where he uses an electric motor to test transmissions. The axles on the first unit seem a little short, is part of the axle sticking out past the hub? No the axle is actually about 1/16" in from the hub. The axles on my other GT-14 seem to be longer.
