Small project and a question

I have a good Magnum 12 sitting on a really messed up 312/8. Been wanting to drop it in something. Picked up this 1998 314/8 with the OHVKohler 14, not sure about the status on the motor but I think it might be junk, oil everywhere and it was already unbolted from the frame. Pretty sure the Mag 12 is gonna have a new home soon!

I know going from a K series to a Magnum the ignition wiring needs to be changed....what about from one of these new fangled Kohlers to a Mag? Both have electronic ignition.

Have the model number of the 312-8?

Should be plug and play except possibly the charging system.

No info or tags on the 312....would the info off the Mag 12 help? It might still have its info decal

Engine numbers should tell us what stator it has.

Or does it have a rectifier/regulator?

It has the regulator under the plastic air filter cover so it’s not the 3 amp system.

If I understand you are going to the 12 magnum it has a complete 15 amp  charging system on the engine including the rectifier. The 10 magnum had a small charging system.

The rectifier is bolted to the side engine cover next to the carburetor.

It should be plug and play.  One kill wire, one wire from the rectifier.  If the Command has a low oil pressure circuit then jump it out before installing the Magnum, or wire it to work with the low oil sensor.

It does have the rectifier/regulator. Sounds like it should be a fairly easy swap.

The 312-8 tractor uses a 3 key position magneto ignition switch with a low oil sensor.

The 314-8 uses a 4 key position battery ignition switch with kill relay with an oil pressure switch which controls the ground for the oil light and hour meter. Hour meter works only when there is oil pressure - oil pressure switch opens.

With no oil pressure switch on the M12 the hour meter will work whenever the ignition is on as long as the oil pressure switch wire is not grounded.

Should work.

Was concerned that going from a Command 14 OHV motor to a Magnum would involve all sorts of wiring...but I simply plugged the Mag wires into the harness on the tractor that had the Command motor and it fired right up!!

No idea. It does have tenants that moved in and made a home so the tins need to come off for a proper assessment.
I haven’t heard a whole lot of bragging about these horizontal shaft Command motors like I do about the K series and the Magnums so I just charged forward with the swap.

No WH has ever left my house (whether sold or traded) with nasty trans fluid.
So why does every machine that enters my garage have this same nasty trans fluid ...:angry-cussingblack:

Well this project is on hold, was hoping to be driving it around by now. Drained the oil from the Mag 12 and partway thru pouring in quart #2 I see new oil on the garage floor. Seems the gasket between the block and the oil dipstick tube elbow thingy is shot. The screws were all tight :eusa-think:...odd, never seen this before.
So waiting for a gasket to be delivered along with a new 7473 belt and the idler pulley for the drive belt.
