Mickwhitt 4,593 #52 Posted July 9, 2020 What are these little beauties for? I picked them up at an engineering show and no one knew what they were for. Only an inch long they are used in pairs. Mick
Mickwhitt 4,593 #53 Posted July 9, 2020 This is a genuine I don't know what its for one. Some kind of key but for what? 5mm Square ⬛ hole in the end. The brass acorn shaped ends screw off as if to provide storage space, the little screw on top of the tee serves no apparent purpose other than for decoration. Made of blued steel and brass. 3 inch long x 2 inch wide

If so that might be match storage Edited July 10, 2020 by John2189 Added
Mickwhitt 4,593 #57 Posted July 10, 2020 Not hollow all the way through, a small space in each end.

Mickwhitt 4,593 #60 Posted July 10, 2020 John, No, they do clamp onto a rule or measuring scale though. Milk

Mickwhitt 4,593 #63 Posted July 12, 2020 This is a similar pair fitted to a six inch rule. Does that assist in identifying its use?
John2189 445 #64 Posted July 15, 2020 Ok just found a pair of these on eBay. They are key seat clamps. But not sure how to use them
Stormin 9,981 #65 Posted July 15, 2020 They are used to mark out keyways on round bars etc. Clamp a rule in them, place against the work piece and scribe a line along the rule. 2

I am a little confused about this. One then just runs pencil or scribe along ruler to mark a straight line on round stock? Is that its intended function? formariz 11,987 #68 Posted July 18, 2020 I may be wrong but in a machinists world is there a need to layout something like that prior to machining? I thought all necessary stops and locations would be set on machinery so an ordinary pencil line would be unnecessary?
Mickwhitt 4,593 #69 Posted July 28, 2020 It is indeed a pair of key seat clamps, used to hold a ruler so keyways can be measured on round bar. Not for setting out so much as for accuracy in measuring in line with the axis of the shaft. Sorry I missed these posts as notifications didn't pop up. Mickwhitt 4,593 #72 Posted July 29, 2020 Bang on Eric, this is a Cortu, magnetuc bottle cap lifter. British patent from the 1950s. Found it in a box of junk on its way to the tip.
