RedRover 27 #1 Posted June 9, 2020 On my 312-8 Is it possible to replace axle needle bearing by going through the wheel side rather than opening the transmission
WHX?? 49,160 #2 Posted June 9, 2020 It's possible to install one from the outside with the right arbor but the big but is the old one has to come out first. So that's a big no.
ebinmaine 68,347 #3 Posted June 9, 2020 If it makes you feel any better it really isn't super complicated to rip one of these things apart and get it back together.
daveoman1966 3,762 #4 Posted June 9, 2020 There are several youtube videos on rebuild of these gearboxes...pretty simple stuff actually.

Ok, assuming we can drill tiny holes in the holder and fish out its remains, can the new needle bearing go back in or does it have a shoulder that holds it in against that part of the transmission housing

They just sit by a press-fit approximately the distance of the thickness of the seal in from the outside of the housing. What worries me is the four words above. If your bearing is that far gone your axle is almost definitely also garbage and will need to be replaced or repaired. 1

When I got the Black Horse, all the needles were in the transmission but the outer race was still intact. Also the drive shaft was undamaged. A Westwood I acquired was a different story. Had been run that long with a knackered bearing, the axle tube was worn egg shape
WHX?? 49,160 #8 Posted June 10, 2020 I gotta like yer lingo Norm... knackered... now that is just a plain cool word! I know what yer thinkin Mcalex and it ain't gonna work.. you don't get it all out and needles drop back in yer gonna be sorry. Yer gonna knacker it up some more. Only one way to get them out. You don't haft to have the puller it's just nice. You should press them back in tho ... hammering them back in can ruin them. How's this Norm... @Achto made some really nice hitch pins and he didn't knacker them up! guy couldn't help myself...

That's where old, injured, sick horses, cattle go to. Means damaged, worn out, tired. Sometimes think I'm ready to go for it. BTW. On their way into the transmission, the needles severely damaged the main bearing. Knackered it, put simply. Edited June 10, 2020 by Stormin 3

Could it be the "Bronco has been rode too hard and put up wet"......and maybe ready for the knackered yard? By reading most comments herein, which have been positive and helpful I feel this bearing replacement job will be an easy fix with minimal damage to the axle and other components. If I'm wrong, it's just a matter of parking this beautiful baby in the dry storage building to be used for parts to keep my other three 17 hours ago, WHX24 said: It's possible to install one from the outside with the right arbor but the big but is the old one has to come out first. 71_Bronco 1,072 #15 Posted June 10, 2020 McAlexander, I was referring to the picture that Stormin had posted, with all the bits and pieces of the bearing from his transmission. The the top of the pic, it looks like the end of the dipstick to check the trans-fluid was broken off and swirling around inside.
RedRover 27 #16 Posted June 10, 2020 Sincere apologies to the Bronco...I'm a newbie to this very informative WH forum and haven't learned the lingo or who is talking to who. Sorry, I salute all you guys and (gals?) 1
WHX?? 49,160 #17 Posted June 10, 2020 27 minutes ago, McAlexander said: bearing replacement job will be an easy fix Yes it is, I had two horses that needed them and did both of them in a day having the parts on hand. Worse part is dealing with the messy fluid and cleaning as required. No apology needed ...Bronco's been known to ride them hard and put away dry... with no oil in the motor that is!
Stormin 9,981 #18 Posted June 10, 2020 If you look at the broken off end of the dipstick, you will see that it is black, just above the F full mark. I think a PO had made one dipstick out of two and that's why the end broke off.
