1969 charger 10 has a transmission leak

Recommended Posts

well again guys i am in need of some information on a leak i have on my charger 10; a few weeks back i changed the oil and filter ;i did not over crank the new filter putting it on ;i noticed last week when i used it to mow under the bottom it is soaked in fluid ;i wipe it all off and yesterday i used it again ;checking the dip stick in was a quart low plus again soaked under neath ;i noticed in the rear of the deck where the wheels are and the adjust bar they were soaked in oil so i think the problem is in the front of the transmission; the drain plug is tight plus most bolts ;so i am not sure where to look for the leak ;could it be a gasket ; i have never really messed with a transmission of these types so any thoughts sure would be helpful; sad this machine out of the 7 i have is my favorite 'but till i figure out the issue it will sit as i would hate to ruin it ;thanks again guys

Are you sure when you changed the filter that the old gasket came off with the old filter. If not that can cause that  a leak, have seen it before just a thoufgt.

Clean off the front of the tranny.  Then watch for leakage from the motion control shaft.  (behind the plastic slider. and the gray metal box it rides in....) Very common leak point....

:text-yeahthat: You'll have to remove the tranny if this is what the issue is, but it is an easy fix after that. You will need a 1/4" 12 point socket to remove the bolts from the gray box. There are 2 O-rings behind that box that tend to dry out & start leaking.

thanks for the reply but i was really hoping that i didn't have to remove it but it seems it needs to be done ;i did talk to a wheel horse dealer today and for his labor rate of 35 per -hour plus parts if could be found as the tractor being so old they would be really hard to get but heck isn't an o- ring the same if they are the same size ;if i could be so lucky to save this old horse which again is my favorite so with weather holding and no rain it seems this is the only way to go as labor rates are so darn high for maybe an few hours work ;i sure will let you know the out come ;again thanks so much

I just did this job on a tractor that also had hydraulic lift. I took the old O-rings to the hardware store & matched them up with new ones. It took about 2 1/2hrs plus a trip to the hardware store. When finished the leak was gone.

thanks so much for your feed back ; as i really appreciate it ;the thing is i do not have the hydraulic lift 'the thing is though the years i have taken so many cars and trucks transmission out and install but never a wheel horse one;i did chat with wheel horse guy earlier and he has tons of old horses in his  lot ;as he told me he could fix it for his labor rate of 45  an hour plus parts but parts for this old tractor put parts  would be very hard to fine;now if we could match up any 0-rings what is the issue but cash ;again thank your and i will keep you informed

If it is the motion control there are two O rings.  Standard Dash # 116 and # 026..I use 026S as they are easier to install.

again thanks to everyone for there thoughts and suggestions ;today i layed a white shower curtain under the transmission and let it run for a while then noticed fluid dripping on the curtain as looking under neath on the left side where there is a plate with 2 bolts left side and right ;the leak was coming from the left side behind the bolt ;i wish i could take a picture as to better explain but i am not sure if i can ;so seeing how i found the leak how do i go about replacing a part or a 0-RING  as most have mentioned ;again i have never worked on a wheel horse transmission ;cars and trucks are one thing but this is so different ;while i am here i would like to ask if any other wheel horse collectors might know the year and the horse power of this older wheel horse as it has the briggs motor and it runs super fine for an automatic ;i payed 75 bucks for it a few years back ;i had to replace the choke and throttle cables plus the ignition after 2 pulls it fires up plus the deck is good and cuts good ;so i would really like to know the year and even the horsepower it has 'and yes a few pictures of my no name and my 1076 automatic with the hrdo lift i paid 100 plus a lantern

Sorry not sure I understand where you found the leak.  Is it near the bolt being removed in the picture  # 37 in parts list??

B&S often stamped their numbers into the flywheel blower housing tin work either on top or on the front behind the air cleaner.

Tractor ID plate may be under the tank tray on the left side or around the corner under the dash panel quite high.

thanks for the reply back and no it seems that someone has removed the tag from under the dash;the only numbers i can find are on the blower unit above the pull start 'they are

#1904-0206-4602-7309-2110

then under neath the numbers are

C-70388 i hope this helps it is a strong runner that is for sure but i would like to knowthe year if possible or even the motor size '

pfrederi;thanks for the diagram and i am sorry if i have confused you as again this is all new to me with these types of transmissions ;i am adding a photo that my daughter took today to hopefully explain where the leak is coming from'under the tractor near the very front there is plate that has 4 bolts on it ;one in each corner ;as in the photo you will see the right side bolt and just above that bolt is where the fluid is lesking out ;i really didn't know it was that dirty as last week i thought i cleaned every thing with the degreaser but to do that i would have to stand on my head as i did lay down and thought i removed all of the grime ;but again you can see the right side top bolt where again it is leaking ;again thanks so much asi really appreciate it ;

Being the sludge is accumulating o the right side of the tractor and coming down from above I would guess it is the motion control leaking.

Split the tractor.  Support the front end.  Unhook the tension spring.  Make yourself a couple of aligning pins in picture. support tyranny on your floor jack.  remove 4 bolts  and roll tranny back..  Take out 2 small screws holding the slider in place.  Note there should be 2 small washers behind them  don't lose them. (blue circles).  Drive out the roll pin (red circle) and pull off the arm;  Remove the three 12 pt 1/4" screws (yellow circle).  Pull off the control box.  Replace the 026S large oring in the triangular holder. small ring goes onto the pump shaft...

thanks so much for the information ;it sure does sound complicated but i am sure i can do it ; though making those alining pins i am not to sure about ;my address is

Dean Borland

1507 west nichols street

springfield mo 65802 again thank you so much ;i would be willing to pay you for those 2 0-rings '

while i am here i would like to ask another question ;there is another wheel horse colletor here in the area that has a 1966 model # 1076 as with the one i have he would like to know if a mower deck model #507207 would fit under neath ; this is a spare that i have and he needs a deck for his ; again thank you

Deck will not fit with out major mods to the tractor

aligning pins are easy .  Cut the head off a 3/8 nc bolt.  Cut a slot for the screw driver to get it in and out of the tranny.  File/grind a bit of a bevel on the end, makes it line up more easily.

Will send o rings today no charge...
