Whole house fans are really awesome. Open the right amount of doors or windows and it's like riding a motorcycle in your living room!

Ah, the old whole house fan. At least that one has a cage as a bunch I've seen were just the open blades. Dangerous. Most would run them in the attic and exhaust it through a large hole in the gable end wall. Open the attic hatch and each window in the house and feel the breeze. Each room was adjustable by how far the window was opened. I think the problem was if there happened to be a fire it would "fan" the flames and poof, the house would go up quick.

Side note: An electrician was telling me that fire departments won't put out a house with solar panels on the roof because they can't cut the power from the actual panels themselves. :dunno:

Growing up we had the same thing. A very large fan in the ceiling of the second floor hallway. It would suck all the warm air up into the attic which would exhaust out the large gable end vents. We never had air conditioning and we survived! I remember helping my dad with this huge fan spring and fall because we had to take it out for the winter so we didn’t loose the heat! Ahhh the good ole days 😀

my old house had a 50s era attic fan bolted horizontal  to one of the rafters in the attic, no case or or cage around it, just 3 big metal blades, we found the mystery switch in the dining room turned it on.  that thing was something.  it's still there but I disconnected it.

That's what we need right now...our old A/C unit decided to literally explode a couple weeks ago. I dont mind it so much, but mama and the boys sure dont like it without air. All our fans around the house help some. But something like that would probably help out considerably, and be cheaper to run than an air conditioner
