D_Mac 8,618 #26 Posted June 14, 2020 Well its done. I dont ever want to do that again. All 4 are in and bolted down tight. Makes a HUGE difference. Before at low idle it would shake like crazy. Now... no shakes. Just the rumble of the 16hp Kohler running silky smooth. I see why they discontinued making them with the shaker mounts. I have to tell you I am really pleased how this tractor came out, I see why so many like these C series, and that 16 hp under the hood... excellent. Couple little small things I would like to do to it, like change the muffler to a stack and work on the rear hitch other then that this baby is done. 3 1 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Kevin Bowley 130 #27 Posted June 18, 2022 (edited) I thought the rubber mounted engines did not have a balance shaft installed? Both of my 78's sssshake just off idle up to about 2500 rpms or so. I set the idle way down so it stays out of "the shake zone" and then when I am ready to move, I adjust the throttle to run above the shake zone. However, once above the shake range, she is smoother than most twins, virtually zero vibration. One would think that it will still shake rubber mounts or not and would not be as smooth when running in the operating range? For example, my 314-h certainly vibrates far more at WOT than the rubber mounted units. You guys have got me wondering as My C-161-H's mounts are shot, all four are delaminated on the top side but my C-121-H runs as smooth as glass with good mounts. I never did put a stack on it but I did add a few things to it after this post was made. It is still one of my favorites was sad to see it go but I like passing them on and look forward to working on the next one. The 416-8 that I did after this one is still my all time favorite. I went through the same headache installing new rubber mounts on my C-121. What I ended up doing was leaving the new mounts loose which allowed some give to line the long bolts to line up. I then installed the bolt about 5/8" of the way in and then tightened the mounts down then tightened the bolts up. Others had recommended removing the bolts from the frame bracket and installing the mounts then bolt the frame mounts back down. I feel your pain @D-Mac Question, when running at 3/4 and above is there lass vibration with the solid mounts? My c-121 is smoother than most twins once above (guessing here) 2,000 rpms. There is a "shake zone" from just off idle up to roughly 1800-2200 rpms then it as smooth as glass, virtually zero vibration. Now I have to do my newly aquired C-161. all four are badly delaminated. D_Mac 8,618 #33 Posted June 28, 2022 Been some time since I owned that tractor but what I remember about it is that engine used to shake like crazy with those rubber mounts. Shake so bad that the air cleaner base started to rip away from where it bolts to the carburetor. Put the solid mounts on and even though it took me sometime to get them on it was well worth the aggravation. Engine ran so smooth after. I recommend tossing those rubber mounts into the nearest trash can. Go with the solid mounts you won't regret it. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
