Odd Relic From The Past

No idea what it is or was used for, the hook on the end of the chain appears to have been hand forged that tapper looks like it at one time had a wooden handle similar to one used on a peavey.

@bcgold Can I see a better photo of the dogs. Are they doubled ? They seem to be the wrong angle and pitch for grabbing a log. Also pivot point is incorrect for logging purposes.

Indirectly it could have been used for a logging operation, or for transporting ice blocks circa late 1800's

That is a very specialized tool. Those 3 holes most likely for a rod to control angle and pivoting of chain. Hooks are not sharp enough or angled correctly for any dragging or moving function whether wood or ice.. They look shaped to pull something specific out like a gear puller.

That is actually a track puller not the spike. Spike puller is different.

Correct and it belongs in the museum not the scrap pile, last time I offered the local museum an antique they declined then asked for something that would fit in an envelope.

We have lots of short lines around our area of Pennsylvania, well we used to.   Mostly to haul coal or coke.   I’ve seen a few of these at swap meets and flea markets.  Thought they were railroad associated.  The mines all had tracks laid in them too.   No wonder they show up a couple times a year.

Great stuff. In what other site would one find such a diverse source of knowledge and information totally unrelated to the site's subject ? I just wish we could all meet in one place someday. It would be an honor.

Video was really interesting,  such hard work with a degree of precision seldom seen for operations done by hand today.

Using music and dance to time the movements is really clever, I guess other jobs may have done similar such as sailors singing to time each haul on a rope.

The knowledge we keep here is being lost at a high rate of knots, so much history being written off by the new world.  Just like we wonder how the Egyptian people built the pyramids, folk will wonder how Cas built those wonderful creations in wood.

This can’t end here.    I’ve got a similar tool, but with a different purpose.

Anyone want to take a shot at what this is?
