Why have I wire wheeled and painted for so long?

Sent 10 wheels to a friends for blasting and powder coating. I’m impressed by the results, how many hours have I lost wire wheeling and spraying in the wind!!!

Any idea what the average person's cost would be for that work compared to traditional painting?

I had wheels blasted and powder coated. $100 a pair. Guy gave up powdercoating. I had him do some discs in black and he couldn't get it to look good so he gave it up

I talked to a couple places by me awhile ago it's way too expensive.  plus i really didnt trust leaving some non replacable parts plus sandblasting was more than the powder coat.  sandblasters are really hard to find anymore.  I just stick with the plastic tote and vinegar and make pickles

not sure, I could drive 40 miles and pay £1 an inch for stripping and coating (about $12 a wheel) I reckon these will be the same.

that’s what worried me about leaving them with a stranger.... GT14 rims are rare in the UK, 5x12 scarce too.

I have a home sandblast gun ( no cabinet ) .

I drag it all way in the backyard when the job requires ( decks , rims snowblower parts etc ) .

It's messy , but thorough .

Most times I just wire wheel things .

My thoughts on powder-coating ?

It's great until it chips , then you're screwed .

With a good paint job ( even a properly prepped rattle can job ) a chip can be feather edged , masked , primed and painted to look spankin' new again .

 True for many things. One thing I found on a set of wheels I had was that if there is ANY rust pitting, it will show right through. You are limited on what you can do with that due to the baking process. I sanded the powder coating off, filled, primed, rattle-can painted and they looked factory new. Painting chips easier unless you use hardner.

 

On the other hand, I had a set of motorcycle wheels that were in pristine condition powder coated to change the color to match the bike and they turned out awesome!

I sandblast to get rid of the rust then prime and paint with rattle can.  I do not see any reason to get carried away one trip around mowing and the insides of the rear wheels are more green than white.
