Two wires will go to an external aluminum finned rectifier/regulator that changes the AC current to DC current to charge the battery. The body of the rectifier must be grounded to the chassis to operate. The metal it is bolted to may have lost its ground via corrosion so we often just add a ground wire from one of the mounting bolts to a known good clean ground. If you still have the 4-position key switch turn it to the RUN position with the engine not running. Check the voltage across the battery terminals and record it. Now move the red test lead to the regulator B+ terminal and measure the voltage there. You should have the same reading as across the battery posts. If not fix that. The charge current has no way to get to the battery. You have breakerless magneto ignition if it is still original. Magnetos are self-powered and the ignition wire simply grounds the ignition to shut it off. Never allow any battery power to get to the ignition as that will burn it up. Keep the questions coming. Garry Adding In the last link I posted is a Kohler service manual. Once you do the above and still not charging follow the service manual to check deeper into the charging system. It explains the proceedure best. You should have the 10 amp system.
