little red riding horse 223 #1 Posted June 3, 2020 Greetings people , need some recommendations on a metal paint that can be applied with a brush and leave a nice flat finish (no brush marks) I know there is more to it than just the paint ie quality brush and a certain amount of skill.... Ive bought some enamel engine paint from amazon that is resistant to chipping and so on but is very sticky and difficult to get it to "lay flat" without brush marks... I realise ill get better results with spray paint but on this occasion brush on works better for me , any suggestions ? thanks ! Phil
JoeM 7,871 #2 Posted June 3, 2020 Might think about cutting it with 5% acetone.
little red riding horse 223 #3 Posted June 3, 2020 Quote Yes was considering trying that, I did email the company who makes the enamel paint and asked if one could use a paint conditioner with it but they never replied …. its was expensive so didn't want to just jump in and do it but I guess I could try a little amount and see how it goes... Lane Ranger 10,946 #4 Posted June 3, 2020 I painted a 1054 tractor ten years ago or more with a quart of Rustoleum red paint (not sure which color) but I researched how to apply with a brush! The secret is a product that painters use on metal like aluminum siding, exterior sheets, etc. It is called Flood Penetrol and it works great. No brush marks will be left if properly mixed and applied with a good bristle brush. https://www.hardwareworld.com/pw3atqx/Penetrol-Oil-Paint-Additive-Quart A quart should do you ! 3

peter lena 8,583 #7 Posted June 3, 2020 using a gas grille flat satin black paint , gives a very nice and very durable finish. i prefer the aerosol paint , as it lays down a perfect finish , back off your paint area too lightly build up paint ,and eliminate issues. my experience, pete
Stormin 9,981 #8 Posted June 3, 2020 Warming paint in a pan of hot water helps it flow, Phil.

Stormin 9,981 #10 Posted June 4, 2020 I wasn't sure to mention what I've been repainting some iron railings with. Never used it before, but seems ok. Got it from Lidl's. Just under £5 a tin. Parkside Anti-Rust Metal Protection paint. 3 in 1. Protection, Varnish and Primer.
