Transaxle swap

Recommended Posts

Can I swap trans from a 656 to a c165?   The 656 has a sickle mower and first gear is too fast. The c165 has the hi lo range which I don’t need to just mow.  I was considering swapping mowers, but pto’s are a problem.

It can be done but the brake drum is in a different location.

That can make the linkage a bit of a challenge to get just right.

I don't have a sickle mower but I believe they are they only thing on a horse meant to be run at an idle.

I converted a 753 to 8 speed for that very reason.  Had to redo the brake linkage and make a slot in the hood stand for the Hi/Lo shifter.  you also have to source a new input pulley on the transaxle.  The newer tranny has a 6.5" pulley 5/8" shaft the 753 had a 4" with  3/4" shaft.   I bought a new pulley to fit.  it was an A/B pulley supposed to work for 1/2" or 5/8" belts.  Works OK. Did this 12-15 years ago I have no recollection of where I got the pullery and may have missed some other requirement.

I tried it at idle and it would not cut. Had to up the throttle to get it to cut, but then ground speed was too fast

That’s what I want to do. Was it a direct bolt up?   I have flat land so I’m not too concerned about brakes, but I would probably hook them up. The pulleys wouldn’t be a problem.

Was thinking.   If I put a bigger pulley on the trans. Wouldn’t that slow it down?

Most times you don't need brakes but the time you do ... You REALLY want them.

Please don't run without brakes.

Correct.

Problem with a bigger pulley is you have to modify the belt guard so the clutch works... Getting right would take some trial and error in that and also getting the right length belt.  New pulley was easier for me as i am not a sheet metal worker  I do not recall the brakes being hard to work out,  Used some parts from old and some from new.

Thanks to all. When I get things caught up,  I’ll do the trans swap, with working brakes :)

I am swapping an 8-speed (or 6-speed) into a Commando 8, which has a 3-speed now. I found a 5060 transmission which has the same brake arrangement as the stock 3-speed, so I dont have to do any modifications. The 5060 also has a limited slip differential and 1-1/8" axles.

I dont NEED the low range now, but thought it would be nice to have in case things change in the future.

Ok I’m not sure what this c165 Trans number is.

I put an 8 speed with 1-1/8” axles from a ‘78 C-101 on my 502 I call Putt Putt.  I wouldn’t change it for the world, unless I get up the gusto to put in the era correct freshly rebuilt 6 speed with limited slip on my shop floor into it!
