'73 Raider 10 Brake Shaft Oil Seal Change ??

Recommended Posts

Mikefeds

While changing the brake band I noticed excess fluid around the Brake drum bolt.  I did not remove the drum, but hopefully thinking it's just the oil seal.   From what I can see from research so far, seal replacement seems straight forward, part is available, PN 100441.  That being said, and not being a transmission expert, it this task as easy as it looks or should I combine the task in the off season and have the wheel seals done as well by my Wheel Horse Equipment dealer ??

Also,  have seen comments about replacing it with another metal based seal rather than the replacement one.....thoughts ??   and suggestions for easier removal of old seal if I'm going for it !!   I read somewhere about bleeding the system too afterwards ??

Thanks for any input ...... BTW all transmission seals are original...... :(.......

That should be a fairly easy job to do  especially where that seal has already been leaking. That gear oil is a good penetrant so the drum will likely come right off. I think there's just a bolt in the end of it that holds it on?

On our horses we do use metal seals. I like the way they set in place better.

If you look at the top of the transmission section there should be a thread that says something about bearing and seal part numbers cross.

There are several different places to get seals or bearings when needed. Lots of parts stores can cross the number. Several places online. One of our vendors called Wheel Horse parts and more has them as well.

I'm really not at all sure where you're reading about bleeding anything. There's no place to do anything like that on these transmissions.

You'll be in good hands with the folks on this website if you want to go ahead and tackle it yourself. It's a fairly straightforward repair.

I just did it on my C-161 and it was very simple. I used a dental pick to pull the old seal.

Thank you !!   I think you are correct and the dental picks will work great.  I did see the cross reference on the seal in another Transmission post.

Mike I've done a couple that were kind of stuck in there pretty well. If the dental pick won't get in there and pull it back out you can use 1/4 inch screwdriver to kind of crush the seal in a little bit which will loosen it up some. Then go back to the dental pick.

I run 80W90 in all ours, all year. Least expensive I can find.

140 was an original spec but hard to find around here.

90 is perfectly fine.

Thanks, last time I did a change I used the 140 which as you said was the spec.   Just noticing everyone’s comments on trans oil weights and I started second guessing my choice....

Eric, you have a new friend in me,,,,LOL.......  When I first got my ‘Horse from my dad, after his passing, it had an issue with battery charging...regulator rectifier replaced and system now charges great And starts great except.....sometimes when I go to start it, I need to engage the PTO, then  disengage it and then start it.......starts on the first turn.....  I did change the safety switch,  but is it possible the switch is defective or the short is somewhere else ?

Thanks Mike.

Just trying to return a little bit of the help I was given in the past.

It is absolutely possible that the problem is NOT the switch.

It's important to remember that these are DC systems.

You must have a decent ground to complete the circuit.

Pop the wires off. Preferably one at a time.

Keep testing to be sure of good results.

Clean the terminal ends.

Double check wherever there's a ground connection.

You'll get it....

Is there a ground connection at the base of the main belt cover ?  Near the rear main pulley ?  .  I noticed what looked like a wire at the base when I was checking the idler pulley.   I’ve looked at wiring schematics and don’t see it.....

Not on either one of my 74s but both had no safeties when I got em.

Not sure what that would be.

Can you backtrace the wire to see where it goes?

So ebinmaine, I went and drained the transmission, pulled the brake drum, and low and behold, the original oil seal was nonexistent.    Cleaned it up, pushed in the new  seal refilled  the tranny and off it went.

you said the brake drum would come off easy.... understatement,  it literally came off with no resistance from the gear oil.

thanks for the support and guidance On this project !
