The tranny in the recently acquired C-120 -8 is locked in third gear.   I pulled the shifter out and the 1/R fork is  centered, but I can not pry the 2/3 fork  out of 3rd.

The input pulley, brake pulley, and axles all turn as they should.    The oil looks good and there was no water in the case.

Any ideas  how to free this without splitting the case?

Looks like it has been sitting quite a while Ed.  You might try filling the transmission to the top with diesel fuel.  Shift rail is probably rusted (condensation).  I would place a good size pan under the transmission in case the seals leak and try to keep the trans topped up.  Might take a few weeks, but it may work.  :confusion-confused:

:confusion-confused:            Considering the pristine condition of this fine :wh: I don't know why you would think of rust in the transmission,                :laughing-rolling:

I know Richard.  I feel like I should get a Tetanus shot just looking at it.  :greetings-wavingyellow:  I can't tell how much damage might be on the block behind the fly wheel.  Ed, just don't force the shift fork...might be just a little surface rust on the rail itself.  Looks like time is on your side.  :orcs-cheers:

C'mon guys.   Yeah, her front is sorta ugly, but her rear end looks pretty good.      I wasn't her fault that some :occasion-clown: stored a leaking bag of rock salt or fertilizer  on her left front tire.

I'm just trying to determine if she was parked due to the tranny being locked in 3rd gear or because the engine locked up. :confusion-shrug:

Alright Ed...jack up the rear end and turn one of the wheels (by hand)...the other wheel should turn in the opposite even if in gear.  If so, the differential is OK.  Now take off the guard and belt and turn the input pulley counter-clockwise...if both wheels turn like they are in 3rd gear, it is most likely the engine.  Repeat the above every few days, but do not force.  If it does break loose, keep shifting and turning the input pulley.  Keep it full of diesel.  After she loosens up pretty good, take another horse and a long fan belt and do the figure "8" thing with the belt...now you can run the trans.  Now you can flush the trans a couple time and see what comes out.  Finally drain and change any leaking seals and put in the 2 qts of 90 wt oil.

Pull out the spark plug and try turning the drive pulley...   You knew that.  :occasion-xmas:

OK Steve, thanks for the detailed write up.     I have done exactly as you suggested and I also am convinced this is a good tranny.

The axle bearings feel good and the seals are not even leaking.   She is full of diesel and soaking.

The brake shaft seal is weeping a little.      Input shaft is dry.

I have declared her a parts tractor.    Everything will be saved except what you see on the bag truck.

I was surprised, one of the deck spindles was good and actually took grease in the zerk.  I cut it out of the deck along with the rollers and brackets.

The engine will be a boat anchor.    It is locked up tight.

Right now that engine is a better jack stand than Harbor Freight has! :)

Getting ready to split the case just in case the shifter rail doesn't loosen up.

Had to make a puller just to get the wheels off.

Then drilled the tranny lugs to get PB Blaster into the hitch pin.

Removed the hub set screws and filled all the holes with PB.    Now we wait.

:techie-hourglass:             May need to mark your calendar for a couple months from now on this one. :(  That much rust won't go down without a fight.   :tools-hammerdrill:
