7carisfast 1 #1 Posted May 26, 2020 I still have our 198x 312-8 that I never want to get rid. Need some help on two topics, which may be related. The first is that it jumps out of 2nd gear 90% of the time when going down hill. The second is that the tractor started to runaway when going down hill out of control (it's fun but scary as crap). The engine used to hold her back but now it can't. Any advise would be appreciated.
stevasaurus 22,863 #2 Posted May 26, 2020 Welcome to Red Square There is a few things you could check outside the transmission. A sloppy shifter could be responsible for popping out of gear...check and re-adjust your dog-point set screw. A worn out or stretched drive belt could be why your engine is not holding your horse back. Most likely it is the belt. Usually, it is 3rd gear that pops out. If it is not the sloppy shifter, then it is going to be either a worn out 2nd and 3rd fork gear...or that part of your cluster gear is worn out...or both. If you have been grinding gears by shifting on the run, you will have to drop and open the trans. One other thing...a low compression engine might not hold it self on a hill. Are you burning oil??
7carisfast 1 #6 Posted June 2, 2020 (edited) Again guys thank you. A bit worried though. All of my research shows a 7473 belt which is 82". I got to the old belt, pulled her off and it measures 80.5". It's worn a good bit on the one side, but what's up with the length difference? This was also posted on gardentractor.com,,,,, ------------- Posted June 25, 2 013 - 06:56 PM I forgot I posted this thread, so I have not been updating it. I measured the broken belt and it came out to 81" so I got an 81" belt... to small. I did not know how much bigger it needed to be, so I was going to get an 82, 83, and 84... but they did not have an 83, so I just got an 82 and 84. I put the 82 on and it seemed to small, so I tried the 84 and it was way to big! I figured it must be an 83, so I brought them all back, and got an 83 inch belt. I put it on and I could tell it was to big... it was actually the 82! Now, I come on here and see that all of the belts Tank listed are 82" belts! Guess I have to go back again! ----------------- The belt will ride further inside the pulley as it wears, but can it shrink? Also, just about crapped my pants on the set screw. Pressure washed her while she was open and then cleaned the set screw. Couldn't really get in there so I decided to take it out to clean the hex-head, Came back and the bearing was down inside the trans. Pulled the shifter out without the bearing/heim. I was able to pull it out and get everything back together. I think I can thank God it was in neutral. No pics as I'm rather embarrassed on the quality of the gear oil I changed out.. PS, anything wrong with this PTO that you see? Thank you all again. Edited June 2, 2020 by 7carisfast
