520hC-120 136 #1 Posted May 25, 2020 Hi everyone, I posted a topic last year about my 1968 Raider 12 that had lost spark. After looking at it and trying to diagnose it last summer I lost interest and pushed it off. This year I want to use the tractor instead of it sitting so I started looking into it again. I have gotten a new condenser and points, they are clean and gapped as well. All the wires including the “m” wire are not grounded or bad. The coil that sits on the stator is also good. I have tested it with 20k ohms and gotten a reading of 8.8ish on it which should be ok. I tested the stator itself by disconnecting all its wires and testing its two leads at the rectifier and I get the stator reading .5 at 200 ohms. So after all that I was wondering if it is worth it to convert the tractor to battery ignition but I have no idea how to and need instruction. Also if I am testing things wrong or missing something then please tell me. If any additional info is needed just ask, Thanks!
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,253 #2 Posted May 25, 2020 What is the problem? Still not running? The magneto ignition is separate from the charging system. Magneto ignitions are self powered and the ignition wire simply grounds the coil to shut it off. Do not allow any battery voltage into the magneto ignition. It will burn it up instantly. Changing to battery ignition will require an ignition coil with built in resistor, likely a condenser for battery ignition, a bracket to mount the coil and a different ignition switch. Best to use a common switch plus a starter solenoid to keep it simple. Garry
520hC-120 136 #3 Posted May 25, 2020 The engine is still not running and has no spark. If I change the ignition system over to battery, would it use the stator it currently has to charge?

As you have ignition points and a condenser you would just need to change the ignition switch to a 103-990, add a starter solenoid and an internally resisted ignition coil like the coils used on VW from around '68 to '74. This drawing is a generic one but as you have no safety switches it will work for you.

520hC-120 136 #6 Posted May 25, 2020 Ok thanks for the help, only thing left is to order up the parts. Norman from isavetractors should have most of what I need.
520hC-120 136 #7 Posted May 25, 2020 Another thing, to make sure that my stator that is currently on the tractor still works. Are there any tests I can do to make sure it’s good and I won’t have to buy one even after I covert to the battery ignition?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,253 #8 Posted May 25, 2020 As long as the stator leads have continuity and not shorted to ground the stator should be OK. The only other requirement is a set of magnets moving past the poles. Here is a manual that has a section on the alternator. Garry
520hC-120 136 #9 Posted May 25, 2020 It has continuity and gives out some power when I crank the motor over. Thanks everyone for the help and advice!
