Jacksback 5 #1 Posted May 23, 2020 I have a WH 227-5 and the gearbox engages on and off so it drives perfect but sporadically. This happened after trying to move a heavy is trailer In reverse in the mud.The woodruff keys appear to be ok so my question is what would likely have happened to the peerless gearbox to make it present these symptoms and are they quite easy to dismantle and repair/service. There are few more than just the 2 in the Axles, means are one each side in the Axle and also one on the input shaft Pulley on the gearbox and one on the Engine. Another issue for your symptoms can be a worn Belt or even a weak or worn Clutch spring mechanism. The Enginepulley have an woodruff key under the Electric Clutch. but to removing the Clutch you have to be very carefully, to don‘t destroy the Clutch. The front spindles are 2 parts, once the continouse driven pulley for Gear close to Engine and on Top of that, the Electric Clutch with a own Pulley for the PTO. both Parts are interconnected and hangin on same woodruff key on the Engine shaft. As check you can throttle quick raising with engaged Mowerdeck the deck must raising that fast as the engine trottles up, If you go back on idle same situation opposite. TRy that 3 or 4 times, if this should be fine, the woodruff key on the Engineshaft seems fine. If with engaged mowerdeck the engine throttles quick up, but the mowerdeck sounds it come later on top speed, it‘s the Engine Shaft Woodruff that id gone, but i doubt that will be happen. The drive don’t needs much torque to move, except heavier loaded and on a steep slope. with a weak Clutch mechanism, worn spring or clamped movement of the levers you will have that effect. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

stevasaurus 22,863 #8 Posted May 23, 2020 I would guess that you stripped a couple of teeth...probably on one of the axle gears. Take it apart, I've never been in one, and see if you can find out what happened. I would shop for another trans if I could not find parts to fix. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I was not allowed by rules of the forum to post this Pictures here and i have no other, so i did it this Way. In the upper left side of the Gearbox you see the Shift mechanism, that shifts the gear with 2 sliding forks. This 2 shift forks in in the documents are as part 8 titled. This shift forks seems to be worn on your gearbox. That results, the shifting of the gear sometimes is not to precise enough to engage a Gear. To find out if it‘s worn tip with depressed clutch over or reduce a bit the shift lever when gear should engaged. If than the gear engages, than the forks are your problem. To solve that problem, disassemble the Gearbox, this shift forks are available for less money. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I checked this pict after my own Gearbox have similar troubles by shifting to locate the Shift forks. But this pict is branded, so i believe to remind i‘m not allowed to insert this Pict. Jacksback 5 #12 Posted May 24, 2020 Ok so I took all the casing bolts out and it won’t come apart. I have left the pulley on does that need to come off and is there a casing lock screw under it . Also how do I get the drive pulley off ? The case is separated all the way round but just will not come apart. Should there be oil leaking out because not a drop has when splitting the case 4mm. A couple of those pages that Garry gave you have parts. Those may tell you if you can still get those gears. Other then that, try putting an add in our "wanted section" in the classifieds. A good machine shop might be able to braze or weld the broken teeth and machine. You are going to want to clean out all of that grease...you have some teeth bits floating around in there. Hi I don’t think brazing gonna put teeth on as all of the cogs have missing teeth, i also have the 801-026A and I think one of the bevel gears is different part number to the 801-026 and I deffo can’t get that but can get the 801-026 so is there a real difference does anyone know? I can get the parts but the cost is high for me because I have to ship from the USA to the Uk and the shipping and import tax makes it around $300 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

As I didn’t have my pulley puller to hand I didn’t know but when I sorted the puller out and took the drive pulley off there was a casing nut in the middle of the casing.
