Rear tire options

Recommended Posts

After 31 years, I need to replace the rear tires on my 414-8. From reading prior posts their seems to be varied options on what type of tire and size. Current size is 23 x 8.50 12 Carlisle turf tires. Replacing with Carlisle tires due to the many comments that other brands due not run true to size as the Carlisle, especially concerning mounted height and width.

My current rims are either 7" or 7.5" and talking with WH dealers, using a wider rim, the 8.5" from a 520H, and using a larger 23 x10.5 -12 tire, would create an interference fit with my 42" rear discharge mower deck. I am looking for one all around tire to use for both summer and winter. Grass cutting with the 414 is only a few times a year as I have a Toro zero turn for lawn cutting.  Besides the  occasional mowing, its hauling items and rear implements such as 920 lb. lawn roller, aerator, dump cart, sometimes dozer blade, and then ,either snow plowing or snow throwing in the winter. I live in upstate NY where we can get serious snow, my 1.25 acre yard is basically flat, mostly a mixture of clay so its usually hard soil in the summer, some sections can be soft in the spring, plus I have a 130' asphalt driveway with an incline.

From reading prior posts, comments are split between turf tires, All Trail tires, or AG. Just asking about your experiences in the snow and effects on the lawn. My only experience is with turfs and chains. I don't want to tear up the lawn when mowing or working on it with the WH. My lawn is well manicured and lush. I understand the AG are great for pulling and pushing on soil, but what about winter snow clearing and effects on the lawn?  Are the AG tires good for snow plowing or throwing without chains? My turfs need chains for winter, and for heavy work during the summer and towing the 920 lb roller when the soil is soft. The turfs and chains don't damage the lawn but can leave marks on the asphalt driveway. I have no experience with All Trails, how do they work in the winter? Need chains?

What are your experiences? Thanks!

I you get rims off a 520 they will fit with no interference. The difference is the wheel outside of the lugs, not inside. I ran them on a 518 with a smaller deck n didn’t rub on anything. I run on Ags on my mower n worker 520, even with the 1 1/2” lugs it doesn’t tear up the yard. The front tri ribs do more damage than the Ags.  But Ags suck in the snow. Chains make a difference, but I never ran em, only with turf tires.

I put a set of Kenda Terra Trac K502's on my Commando 8. The tires were originally bought for another WH, but I decided to put them on my Commando. I wanted something a little more aggressive than turfs, but didnt want ags. I also wanted a tire that would be the same on all 4 corners (OCD kicking in).

The rears are slightly larger than the stock tires, but I think they look really sharp. I'll have to take a picture of the tires on this weekend.

I thought a 414-8 would have 9.50 width rear tire (not 8.50) - but I do realize some 400 and older 500 series tractors had 8.50 width

42 RD deck is compatible with a 520-H with 10.50 rear tires - so I assume there should be enough clearance for your 414 with 10.50 rear tires

pic below of a 312 with 9.50 Titan rear tires and a 42 RD deck ;  10.50 rear tires would be 1/2" wider on each side ... ? ... so from this picture also it appears there should be sufficient clearance

Thanks for the info. I measured the clearance on my 42"RD deck to the stock 23 x-8.50 -12 tires and I have 1.25" of clearance, and the fenders have 1 5/8" and 1 /3/8" clearance.

WVHillbilly, Awesome looking tractor! Your 520 has 8.5" wide rims? Mine only has 7". Trying to buy wider rims to run larger width tires.

Questions, what size tires do you have ? How heavy are your wheel weights? Very Impressive suit case weight rack, is a rack system like yours still available for sale somewhere?

Several members have stated that the AG's have very poor snow traction, especially in reverse? Is the pattern on your tires different from other AG tires allowing you to have better traction in the snow and in reverse?

Many thanks for the info and the pictures!

Yes 8.5" wide rim, 55-60# steel weights plus 5 gals of methanol per tire, suitcase rack custom built by me, if you look closely at the tire the center tread is perpendicular to the tractor before it angles away there by in my opinion and observations since buying this brand no need for chains and no traction issues for me.
