Flat Thunder Channel 178 #27 Posted February 24, 2021 Well the engine arrived....I think........ Nothing like seeing the pallet jack ram repeatedly into the most expensive and most important part of your new project. Still working out what to do with this poor victim of freight shipping? I can't tell if it was packaged correctly or not, but the aftermath sure was destructive. She definitely isn't all nice and shiny anymore.

I guess if the shipper hadn't used an old POS pallet to strap those cheesy "Husky" tie downs to, it may have survived. That pallet was 'firewood' LONG before it was used to ship that motor. Shame on the shipper for using junk from a dumpster to ship it. Edited February 24, 2021 by Jeff-C175 1
Jeff-C175 7,202 #30 Posted February 24, 2021 (edited) At first glance, before I focused on the 'big picture', I thought... WTF is a SHOE doing in there with the motor? Edited February 24, 2021 by Jeff-C175 1

Shame on the shipper for using junk from a dumpster to ship it. Good point! I never thought about the condition of the wood in the pallet. I think you are right it was weathered pretty good. I didn't see how it was strapped in, but my initial thoughts were the ratchet of the straps were exposed underneath the pallet. I think one of the many forklift picks smashed/ripped the straps off the pallet. The side walls were pretty decently constructed, but it needed more cribbing to support the engine. Maybe a different strap on configuration too.

The driver couldn't get the jack under the pallet because the engine was down in the pockets. I'd hate to see what the real fork trucks did to it. littleredrider 409 #33 Posted February 25, 2021 Since you took pics, the shipper is aware of the damage and have a claim I hope? I used to work for Fedex Freight, had stuff like this all the time. Long as there’s pics of on the truck n the shipper is aware should be ok. Still sucks tho....
Pullstart 62,912 #34 Posted February 25, 2021 Bummer! I’ve shipped a tractor to Bavaria and a transmission to CT I believe it was. Care in packaging does wonders! No damage to the freight, though the tractor crate was accidentally ripped open at arrival to Stefan’s place. 1

I actually videoed it and removed the lid of the crate on the lift gate if the semi. The delivery driver was pretty nice and recommended I open it up to check everything. I accepted noted as damaged. Unfortunately, the shipper didn't opt for insurance. He says he 'forgot', but either way I don't think the freight company will do much without insurance. We worked out a deal for a partial refund on the engine. I wish it arrived all nice and shiny. However I think I'll be able to fix it. It will never be as nice as it was before it shipped, but it will facilitate my purpose.

Just out of curiosity what's an overseas shipment of a tractor cost?

I provided crating materials (I am pretty sure everything was reclaim or free except the nails) and did a bunch of paperwork to ease the customs people’s minds, along with dimensions and accurate weights in US and Metric forms, the shipper took care of the rest from pick up in my driveway to receipt end in Germany. the audio of this is screwed up, but here’s some of the story. 1

It made it all the way to Germany! That's impressive. Your crating was definitely built better than the one I received from California. Cool story

Cool story Sorry to hear from your worse , contact the Company the shipped, they be responsible for damages. like @pullstartwrote, that was definitely a perfect Crate. The cost normally is between 800-1000$. The delivery is depending also on the Companies and sometimes their Drivers here. I was in luck about the favor, but i didn’t know before about the Cost. but it arrives completely in perfect shape. only the Crate get‘s a light rip by unload helping from Martl, because he must put it in his FEL of the huge Tracta. While put it on floor all was fine, just when he lift the FEL after that, he ditched a little the side. That shows it was perfectly crated. Out first shaking hands Some trailrides on Bavarian territory And She feel‘s fine here. A littlebit upgrades and customizing And She is still the Beauty in the Stable But also senseful in use And she have a travel over more as 10.000 miles behind her. i hope your Transport company will refound you for the loss, all other is inacceptable. They be responsible for the Shipping and their Driver’s that they deliver your goods in perfect shape. When i see the palett, it appears to be good mounted but smashed a little extreme hard.

Flat Thunder Channel 178 #42 Posted April 9, 2021 I finally got an opportunity to test this bad boy....... Super Excited The Harley Davidson Street 750 sounds great! The fuel injection works and it will never have to be 'choked'! Headed in the right direction, but it will be awhile before a proper transplant can take place. Right now I'm just happy it runs and didn't blow oil or a rod out the side. 3
Jeff-C175 7,202 #43 Posted April 9, 2021 Read up on Fram filters. They are generally regarded as junk by many people.
Flat Thunder Channel 178 #44 Posted April 9, 2021 I have always used Fram oil filters. Never experienced any issues with Frams standard line (Extra Guard) filters. I have used a few Wix, Napa, and Purolator filters over the years. I'd say all regular/gas powered automobiles were predominantly Fram. I do purchase Harley factory oil filters for my motorcycles. I opted for Fram on this engine out of convenience. If it stays around for an extended period of time it will be switched to a Harley Davidson brand filter. I was surprised it was made in India. It's not my choice location for manufacturing. Go team USA!

Until I saw a number of different ones dissected and the quality difference became obvious. NONE of the other manufacturers use CARDBOARD in their filters. Go ahead and ask Mrs. Google how good (or bad?) are Fram filters? Reality is that as long as you regularly change your oil and filter the quality difference is probably not a show stopper. Not gonna trash your engine any worse on the inside than the packer / shipper did on the outside. Edited April 9, 2021 by Jeff-C175
seuadr 488 #47 Posted April 9, 2021 just had a thought - are you going to have a fan for the water cooling or do you think you'll move around enough to provide the airflow? maybe you covered it already, i don't recall.

I have an auxiliary car fan if the factory cycle one on the radiator isn't sufficient. I will have to plan out all those details during the transplant / testing phase.
