wheelwhores 107 #1 Posted May 19, 2020 Considering getting one. What is there to know be aware of? what can they handle/cut? it's going on my c175
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,033 #2 Posted May 19, 2020 Run them as slow as possible so they don't shake themselves apart. Back in the 40's and 50's 1-1/2 to 2 hp powered them. Garry

Anywhere the soil has been disturbed but not yet planted with new landscaping, a sickle bar mower keeps the brush from taking over. The tough blades cut right through woody seedlings, keeping weedy shrubs and trees from invading open land.

Not a whole forest, perhaps one small softwood species of that diameter at a time, years ago it was common to see a three legged farm dog who had lost a leg to a mower. Trouty56 565 #7 Posted May 19, 2020 I had one...I took the pto bell off and got a smaller pully to run it....not full throttle either....I just cut tall grass. I saw a post where one guy was trimming his hedge as it will run at a 90 degree angle....1 inch is probably a bit heavy....more like 1/2...and it is not made for that.... I cut road sides just to use it.... Here is a video...might have to back it up to the beginning.... 1 1

Tractorhead 9,064 #9 Posted May 19, 2020 I misused a Sicklebar to Trim the Hedge and save my Back. I reworked an old Sicklebar with 1,10meter in width for that. The Hydraulic System itself needs about 6-8 HP of the Engine to have enough Power to cut. i reduced a bit the Oilpressure for that Hydraulic channel down to 100 Bar instead the maximum of 176 Bar what is availabe at the Oilpump itself to limit the cutting size and to protect the system for Overload. That is a Pict of my Reworked Sickle it was a Danvoss Oilmotor doubleaction with 8ccm Flow. I mount an Oilmotor with 8ccm on it and build a separate Mount. it will be driven by a Hydraulicpump with 6ccm With the mount i be able to rotate it in every Angle between 0 -72Deg it works nice up to 3/8, thickness at all, than it begin to stall sometimes. But because of the bidirectional possibillity i just have to reverse the Oilflow on the controller and it Cuts completely. The actual rotationspeed of the Oilmotor is about 50- 80 RPM The result can be seen below. Trimmed Hedge on the Frontyard Trimmed Hedge along the Roadside. i thinkerin on a Hydraulic Level Upgrade, but i still also can use it how it is. Just the Top Cut wobbles a bit depending on the Sidewalk wobble. But no Backtroubles after cutting the Hedge further, so it‘s works for me. 2
