I have question about the RJ58 transmission I have the tractor up on  blocks with the transmission in nutral I can free spin the rear axle and the drive pully will spin. When I put it in gear it locks up should I be able to get the transmission to turn. Thanks for in feedback

The gearing is causing resistance when it's in gear. Can you spin the drive pulley when it's in gear and the differential turns the wheels?

I put the transmission in gear the drive pully will not trun at all I put a pipe wrench on the pully it still will not turn.

The differential will only turn when in nutral I was surprised to see the the drive pully turnng as well when it was in nutral

Check out this video...

It can only be a couple of things.

1. pull the shifter and see if you can see the square that is formed by the forks, when the transmission is in neutral.  While these 3 piece transmissions do not have the suction problems from the shift rails that the early 2 piece transmissions have.  You still can be in 2 gears at once with this trans.  This can be fixed without dropping and opening the trans.  Use a screw driver down the shifter hole and move the fork or forks to make the square.  Always come to a complete stop when shifting.

2.  Something is holding up the cluster gear, and when you shift, the fork gear can't turn the cluster gear.  I can't imagine what would do that and you can still put the trans into neutral.

I think it is #1.  When you shift into neutral you are still in one of the gears...probable reverse.  Let us know what you find.  :occasion-xmas:

I think Im only able to shift into two gears  the front left and right not sure what gears they are I will rewatch the video not able to pull back from nutral to the left or rigth to select any other gears. How do you remove the shifter. Thanks for you help and hope. I was feeling a little overwhelmed back at it tonight after I'm done washing the dishes making the bed LOL

thanks again

WOW!!!  I love it when I guess what is going on.  :occasion-xmas:  Really, after watching that video and seeing how it all works, it almost had to be the shifter not in the right place.  You were in reverse and you would lock it up when you shifted into 2nd or 3rd gear.  You may want to run some diesel through that trans to loosen and clean out the gunk.  The gunk is what pulled the shift rail back when you went to shift into 2nd or 3rd.  BTW, the way you fixed the problem is the only way to do it.

It was a very educated guess...almost could not be anything else.  :orcs-cheers:
