Wheel Horse 416-8 (Year 1990) will not move

Recommended Posts

So I have a 416-8 that all of a sudden stopped moving.  I was cutting the grass and moving forward and reverse and at some point I would not move forward when shifting from R to 1.

When I first got this WH I ran across the issue of having the range selector in neutral and not being able to move. Thanks to a previous post I read, my problem was solved.  However, this seems different.

Here are the facts (all with the WH off)...

- Range selector in either the hi or low position and shifted into N, I can push the WH.

- Range selector in either the hi or low position and shifted into into  gear (1,2,3 or R), I cannot push the WH.

- Range selector in neutral position and shifted into any gear (N,1,2,3 or R), I can push the WH.

Any help and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would start by looking at your rear wheel hubs. Check to see if you sheared a key on one of them.

Does the gear shift feel like it is moving something inside the transmission?  Possible that the shift lever might not be moving the shift forks.

Good luck.

I am with Achto your three "facts" seem normal to me if I am understanding them correctly.

Nothing wrong inside your transmission if all you say is true.  That is what you should have.  I think Dan nailed it...you got a hub spinning on the axle.  Jack it up and use a black marker to check.  Draw a line across the axle and hub.  :occasion-xmas:  Don't forget, you have a key in the input pulley of the trans also...if it is not a hub.

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions.

I was given this WH from the owner of the house I bought so it is the first lawn tractor I have owned.  Overall, it seemed neglected as the motor oil came out like molasses when I changed the oil.  I proceeded to change the oil and air filters as well and it ran much better.  Then, of course, this happened.  I am handy in other ways, but the extent of my mechanical expertise is limited although I am anxious to learn... that's the fun part, right?!

In regard to the spinning hub, are there and resources I can refer to that you would all recommend that can give me a little more guidance?  I can easily start taking things apart, but I need to be clear on what I am looking for.  I will start to dig on my own based on what has been described above and hopefully in the meantime you all can give me a  little more direction.

Thanks again!

The hub is keyed (wood ruff) on the axle and hub.  There is a square head bolt with a lock nut in the hub that tightens the hub to the axle.  If the key is worn and the hub is loose, the hub can slip on the axle and the tractor will not move.  It can be either wheel and it only takes one of them to be loose.  If you take a black marker and make a mark or line across the end of the hub and axle and then drive it around.  If the mark is not like you drew it after that then the hub moved on the axle.  You have to remove the loose hub and see how bad the damage.  A new key and maybe drilling another hole in the hub at 90 degrees to the other bolt...tapping that and adding another bolt may fix it.  :occasion-xmas:

The pulley driving the transmission is on a keyed shaft also., if that key is sheared or missing the same symptoms would occur.
