WHwest8597 85 #1 Posted May 18, 2020 My 314-8 is jumping when I release the clutch pedal. Is there any adjustment? Does the drive belt need replaced?
Sam Pasch 449 #2 Posted May 18, 2020 My 867 does the same thing. I just let off of the clutch slower and it doesn't do it.
Lee1977 6,777 #3 Posted May 18, 2020 I had to replace the drive belt on my 312-8 last year because it was jumping. I also replaced the clutch spring at the same time.
Cvans 1,009 #4 Posted May 18, 2020 Are you using a rubber edged belt or a wrapped belt? Rubber edged belts make it hard to start smoothly and will tend to grab.
CCW 1,300 #5 Posted May 18, 2020 My 312 does the same. Learn to be very gentle with the clutch and added about 70 pounds to the front.

If the foot rest is in too far it will catch on the clutch arm and hold it for a second while releasing then let it go resulting in a sudden start.
edgro 677 #7 Posted May 18, 2020 Here's a thought. My c160 seems to have a lot of rolling resistance when cold. I'm assuming from the trans lube. It's jumpy when starting off cold, but not so when warmed up. Is this your case, or does it happen all the time?
CCW 1,300 #8 Posted May 18, 2020 For me the jumping start will happen all the time. Always has. I remember 15 years ago when I help my mother cutting the lawn and it was the same then.
71_Bronco 1,072 #9 Posted May 19, 2020 My Commando 8 will do a little jump if I let the clutch out too fast, doesn't matter what gear I'm in. Only time it doesn't do it is reverse. I can imagine mine would be a little worse though (lighter tractor, shorter wheel-base). You could check the manual, I would think there is a way to adjust it. Tuneup 1,433 #10 Posted May 19, 2020 The point on the coated belt is well made. My 125 has a kevlar coated belt and the engagement is smooth as silk. The older 120 got the basic rubber replacement and it's a jerky start. I understand that Tractor Supply stocks these coated blets - I've also seen them there. Good luck!
stevasaurus 22,863 #11 Posted May 19, 2020 This will probably help 75% of you guys. Take off the guard and the belt. Make sure the pulleys are clean and shiny and then wipe the pulleys and the belt with mineral spirits. Don't soak the belt, but what you are doing is cleaning it. 1 1
