Hi all,

Any aero buffs out there?

I'm making a wind vane of a specific plane.

anyone tellme what plane it is? See if my cutting out skills are any good.

Thinking it is actually the phantom as well, used to pass by the one on display at Mount Pleasant airport quite often (Falkland Islands).

I made a model of that when I was a kid in the 70's. One of my FAVORITES.

 

I remember seeing those landing at the Tulsa airport back then. Lots of Iranian pilots were being trained in Tulsa before the fall of the Shah. I can still hear the howl of those awesome engines.

Its a coincidence that the Phantom was one of my favourite planes as a kid too. 

I made models and saw it at the local air show at RAF Finningley which is now a civilian airport.

I used to see tons of English electric Lightenings too as we were near Lincolnshire where a lot of wartime airfields were still active with the military.

Best plane of all was the Vulcan V bomber, never get over seeing those fly.

I think my next silhouette has to be a wheelhorse tractor.

There's a Vulcan at the Solway Aviation Museum at Carlisle airport.

I think the last one to fly is hangared at Finningley or Doncaster Sheffield robin hood airport as its confusingly named.

The programme about how the Vulcan bombed port Stanley airport was amazing. Apparently they found an essential part of the inflight refuelling rig being used as an ash tray in the officers mess.

My house used to overlook that runway from across Stanley harbour.

 

A friend of ours was digging foundations for a new building at the airport. The bucket of his digger hit something and slid down it, so they got out to investigate.  It was an unexploded bomb with the digger bucket scratches down it's side! He didn't drive a digger for a long long time afterwards, was pretty shaken up by the experience.

Wow!  Could it have been from that raid, or an Argentine left over.

Either way I wouldn't want to go digging round one lol.

From memory it was an unexploded one from the raid, but would have to check. Plenty of old ordinance laying about, they found an ammo stash near our house when putting the roads in for the new development and we used to quite often go to a little beach that has "at your own risk" signs because all the area around it was mined. I stayed briefly in Goose Green when my wife was working out there and we had a minefield just outside the back door

No. I was one of the guys under it. Aircraft is still moving up on the catapult at this time ready to be hooked up. They have the holdback cable on it getting ready to put the bridl on. Yesterday when I was young.....

We followed the USS Ranger back from Nam.  Those F-4's were making their approach right over top of us.  Was fun to stand on the 04 level and watch them. Seemed like we could reach up and touch them. Not the prettiest planes but from what I gather they were a great plane to fly.  Was told that it takes 2000 pounds of pressure on the tail to lift the nose off the ground.  Gives you and idea how effective the elevator was.

I took a trip at 16 or 17 years old to Croatia and went hiking in the Dinaric Alps near Rijeka/Split of I recall.  We climbed 6 peaks in a day and at camp there was one more mountain that looked appealing to climb.  Our guide exclaimed, “You would be STUPID to climb that, it hasn’t been demined!”  I convinced two other guys to come along and the views that evening are some I’ll never forget!  
 

Three days climbing with only rations on your back, no experience, hanging on to loose cables tied to mountain sides to get to another cliff...  that was possibly the best excursion I’ve ever been on!

This is the start of my weather vane project. 

Customer wanted the laser cut silhouette so that's what we went with.

Spindle is mounted in a custom made ball bearing cassette so its low friction and long lasting.

Just got to make the arms and letters now and we will be good to paint.

That's turning out really nice. Hard to tell from the photo, is it Stainless steel?

I thought it was but it's just cr4 carbon steel.

It will be painted and should look pretty good.

I've made quite a few now and seem to have got a good system.

Cant wait to make a wheelhorse one.
