Recommended Posts

It is time to consider rebuilding the transmission on my 89 312-8.  Any advice or links to existing postings here on RS would be great. - Thanks

what is making you think it needs a rebuild?   oil seals and oil change can be done without stripping...

There's a plethora of trans threads to reference. Use the search feature up there

This is exactly why I asked this question.  Tractor runs great, just very dirty and leaking oil from transmission area.  Brake is very oily even after I cleaned it up.

I think you just made me a very happy person because I did not really want to break down the tranny.  See my pics below.

Looks like it needs dropping and putting on a bench. Drain the oil, pull the brake pulley and drive pulley. Then clean up with kerosene.

seals can be pulled without splitting and it’s safer to fit them with the trans together - the lip can be damaged fitting them before...

Jack it up and try wiggling the rear wheels.  any up down front rear movement bad axle bearings.  That much leakage could be the result of failing axle bearings

Thanks all.  I will do as you suggest.  Dad was not the best at maintaining the horse over the years.  Seepage is not atrocious as it seems.  The drip pan has accumulated that layer over the winter and this spring.  Transmission is still well supplied with oil.

Debating whether to do this during the summer or winter.  Most likely summer.

The brake drum shaft seal is a common problem. Soak the brake band in gasoline for a day or 2 as you do all the seals. Let it dry out and evaporate, clean the drum well and it will stop on a dime when adjusted properly.

Put the horse on a trailer and take it to a do it yourself car wash.  Use the high pressure hose with some soap, it will do a good job.  Take some quarters and wear a rain coat.  :occasion-xmas:

I like that idea.  Then I can see where it is actually leaking from.

Just be careful at the car wash, most have signs that say no oil or grease cleaning or something like. If they do and they catch you it can cost you a lot of money and possibly a fine.

Thanks.

Maybe I will just use my pressure washer I have here at home.

See if they have a sign.  They don't have a sign around me.  If you have one, it will do a nice job, and then you can work on it.
