71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted May 13, 2020 (edited) On my 5060 transmission I'm rebuilding, I purchased a new brake band liner from our local RS member @rmaynard The brake drum is part number 3902. I have the one that came on the 5060 transmission, as well as the one from the 5053 that is currently in my Commando 8 (the 5060 is going to get swapped into the Commando 8). Is there a spec for the outside diameter I should need? Or do these drums not really wear with use? I dont mind putting new parts into this 5060 if needed, but I'm not sure how to tell if I need a new drum or not. Thanks! ebinmaine 68,345 #2 Posted May 13, 2020 As long as it's not rusted to perforation or the metal parts have been in contact with each other you should be fine.
stevasaurus 22,863 #3 Posted May 13, 2020 Right Eric...I have never seen any wear on the drum itself.

I wasnt sure if it was the friction material that wore, the brake drum that wore, or a combination of both. Kinda like the brakes on a car. I'll just clean up the ones I have and mount the better looking one.

On drum brakes I've never gotten too concerned about a groove or two. Just clean up the drum of oil if there is any, and maybe scratch a light glaze on to the drum, at most. Even if the drum itself doesn't have a perfect surface there is a large amount of contact area and the shoe will seat in a little if it needs to.
