bc.gold 3,403 #1 Posted May 12, 2020 Often that part of a shaft where the seal rides a grove is worn into the shaft, a new seal will stop the leak for a month or two. Installing a speedi sleeve is an inexpensive long lasting cure. I've used them to repair a worn hydraulic pump shaft, the sleeves are available in various SAE and metric sizes. ebinmaine 67,267 #2 Posted May 12, 2020 I remember selling these for used on higher mileage V8 back in the 90s. Came with a seal, sleeve, dab of loctite I think?

Yup. small block Chevy harmonic balancer. Green Loctite sleeve retainer. Also used to lock sleeves on industrial pumps and worn keyways.
formariz 11,987 #4 Posted May 12, 2020 Wonder if something like that could be used on a worn RJ shaft?
squonk 41,020 #5 Posted May 12, 2020 The material on these sleeves is very thin. They work sealing a single groove caused by a seal. If the damaged area is load bearing, like where the bronze bushings on a RJ ride, they wouldn't last.
bc.gold 3,403 #6 Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) SKF have developed an abrasion resistant sleeve. SKF Speedi-Sleeve Gold For highly abrasive applications, the new generation of SKF Speedi-Sleeve is also available in the Gold version. A thin, metallic coating applied to the base stainless steel imparts a gold color and significantly increases durability. SKF Speedi-Sleeve Gold is particularly effective in environments where there are abrasive contaminants, especially when combined with a seal manufactured from the SKF FKM material SKF Duralife. This sealing system solution lasted 2,500 hours in a contamination test. Edited May 12, 2020 by bcgold
Stepney 2,325 #7 Posted May 12, 2020 The SKF sleeve and seal set up is what I have rigged onto the timing gear cover of my tired and depressed old Ford 300/6. Works a treat, and now my fan belts aren't getting oiled every time I open the throttle.. I ordered a generic kit. Sized it myself, not the slip on job with loctite. Iced the crankshaft end and kept the sleeve in an oven at high temperature. Slipped on nice, once cooled it was a good solid fit. In fact it's the one thing on the truck that doesn't leak. 1
oliver2-44 9,679 #8 Posted May 13, 2020 I installed one on my Oliver backhoes' diesel injector pump shaft more years ago than i can remember. It's still sealing, no diesel leaking into crankcase. We also used them around the Hydro Plants on a few applications. 58 minutes ago, formariz said: Wonder if something like that could be used on a worn RJ shaft? I have a worn suburban shaft that I've thought about putting one on. I thing they would work yust fine. a bit of a challenge shiding them a little distance down the shaft, but they would work.
