Hi I'm new here. Just got my third wheel horse. 312 hydro

ID 3112ke01

13093

Getting it ready to run and am confused with hydro fluid.

Is 10w30 ok and HOW MUCH.

I have the new filter.

Now that I'm signed up, perhaps searching for myself will be easier for me, or maybe not lol. Thanks

Welcome to Red Square

We do have a very good search facility, but nothing wrong with asking questions.  Yours is easy...you want to use what is already in it.  If the oil is brownish, use 10W-30.  If the oil is reddish, use ATF.  :occasion-xmas:  The thing is, you really have to be clean with these units.  Unless you are taking it all apart and cleaning everything, you do not want to mix the different oils...so...use what is in there.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

As to how much...go to our "Manuals" section and find the manual for your horse.  That may tell you, or you can drain out what you have and use what comes out to guess how much to add..and you should have a dip stick to finalize the level.  :eusa-think:

Type in your model number as  31-12KE01   it is a 312-H.  I'm guessing that the "E" stands for Eaton transmission.  I think you have a 1990 year tractor.

Here is the Eaton Manual...looks like 10W-30  Quant...5 qts.

Make sure you use the correct type of oil filter, NAPA 1410 or Wix 51410 are good one's

Thanks a lot. I'm over whelmed.

This no clutch pedal is new to me.

I'll tell what I did, please tell me where I'm being a bone head.

This thing had a yard sweeper with it's own engine at one time.

When removing the hardware from it, I noticed many chassis bolts were loose.

To get to some I removed the spin on filter above left rear wheel area.

Got new filter and 5 quarts 10w30.

Then removed plug in rearend or differential, left bottom, with Allen wrench.

Pulled dip stick located under seat and fluid drained faster.

Replaced plug and new filter.

Put oil in at dip stick tube.

It will not take 5 quarts.

4 over fills it past top of tube.

It seems to like 3+ on stick even after running it.

2 1/2+ qts and what was in the old filter. The machine had been sitting long time.

Let me ask this way.

Is the "transmission" and rear end all one unit with one drain plug and filled through the dip stick tube?

Does it have a vent?

This hydro is foreign to me.

I'll probably have to strip all the tin and study this unit.

Great info on this site. The links by file mod are probably what I need to dial in choke on one my others.

You will get far less than 5 quarts in after a drain, that is normal,  If the oil looks bad, run it a bit and do it again to remove more of the old oil.

Yes, the transmission is one unit.

The dipstick has a small hollow curled stem, be sure it hasn't been smashed or filled with debris so that it can vent.

Many tractors are run for years without cleaning the fins on the hydro, I suggest that you pull the seat, fender pan, console plates and fuel tank and give it a thorough cleaning.  I use Gunk engine cleaner and then wash it with a garden hose.  I'll bet that you will find a lot of crud and rust.  Paint as needed.  All the moving joints in there except one can be lubed, I use chain oil.  The exception is the friction washer on the speed control atop the hydro.

The 5 qts is when brand new.  Capacity...  :handgestures-thumbupright:  The pump and the trans-axle are 2 units, but they share the oil in the system.  The trans-axle is the holding tank...so to speak.

Thanks for reassurance. Everything I found said 5 quarts and I don't want to smoke this thing. Will do what you suggested, clean, check out, lube, and flush again, it was sitting.

It has 700 hours.

So far I did tires, battery, oil and trans fluid changes, grease, cleaned fuel tank/line, and general clean up.

The deck is next.

Does anyone know the name of the part that's a short hose with belled ends that runs between the back of air box and engine? And where to get one. My local dealer was no help there.

Can someone direct me to a discussion on adjusting the speed control lever on the 312 h?  I apologize for not being experienced or smart enough to find it on my own.

The lever backs down on its own and has to be held forward manually.

I probably have about 10 hours on this horse.

Well I found the nut to tighten to increase lever friction. Let me ask.

With go forward lever all the way forward, I can turn the cam a little more.

Does this need adjusted?

There is usually a bit of spring back on that cam.  If you think it is excessive, adjust the linkage.   The friction washers above and below the cam plate should be clean with no lubricant, it might be a good idea to remove them and sand them flat.
