Help Identify Tiller

 The tag is affixed on a bolt so I’m not sure it’s correct.

looking for help to identify.

tag is either 4251 8 or 1251 8

I have been asked if it will work on the classic, 300, and 400 models but I’m not sure.

Probably NOT without changing the front hitch of the tiller....here is the difference:

I don’t think it’s that 7 1211

The hitch mount appears longer more like the newer one.

However, it’s not the same as other tillers I’ve had and used on my 418 and 520.

I'm not sure what it would take for the 7-1251 but I'm thinking it could be made to work. The older 7-1211 that Dave pictured will work. I used one on my 1976 for years. I did modify it but only so I could use the newer style idler set up. Originally the idler mounted at the very back of the frame just in front of the transmission. You had to move the right side running board out and add another belt guard as well as using two belts to drive it. It was a major pain to install. It also uses a different axle bracket. On the plus side you didn't have to remove the slot hitch to hook it to the tractor. It utilized it to lift the tiller. I purchased the newer style idler, eliminated the one at the transmission and ran the belt the same as the newer style. Nothing on the tiller had to be modified. Basically it utilized the best of both eras. The fact that it used a different axle bracket could be a bit of a pain because you'd have to change it to install a snowblade but I used a blade on a different tractor and the 76 had a blower on it in the winter so it didn't matter. The idler pulley on the later tiller wasn't on the older style. Instead it was 0n the axle bracket. It was actually much easier to do than explain.

According to the manual the 7-1251 works on all long wheelbase tractors which would include the C series. I suspect that yours might have been modified at some point but I can't say for sure without seeing it. My write up was for the 7-1211 which was made for the late 60's and early 70's 6-speeds and Wheel-a-Matics. They also work fine on the later B's, C's and 3-4-500 model as is but I didn't like the idler set up on them so I made a hybrid out of it and it ended up, in my opinion, better than what Wheel Horse produced. On yours the tiller mounted idler pully is not factory which seems to indicate that it was suppose to have the axle bracket mounted idler like mine had. According to Martinos book the 7-1251 was made in 1973 which puts it smack in-between the older 7-1211 that I had and the latest version. So, I'd say yes, it will work but it's hard to say what has been done to it over the past 47 years. If you're looking to buy it keep in mind the potential costs to get it back right and the tines are very worn.
