lobo 22 #3 Posted May 3, 2020 I'm sorry, it's an automatic, single cylinder
stevasaurus 22,863 #4 Posted May 3, 2020 lobo...is it just the seal you want to change out??
lobo 22 #5 Posted May 3, 2020 Yes, I think that's all that needs replaced
stevasaurus 22,863 #6 Posted May 3, 2020 Glad you posted here...thanks. The seal is Wheel Horse 6449 crosses to SKF 11124. The carter pin puller is at the bottom right. Use something like this to dig out the seal.
lobo 22 #7 Posted May 7, 2020 This may be a dumb question but I have to ask,, if the seal is bad how likely is it that the bearing is bad also?
stevasaurus 22,863 #8 Posted May 7, 2020 Once you get the seal out, grab the shaft and see if you have any play...up/down and side to side. If the bearing is good, you will have little to zero play. If you have slop in there, you have a worn bearing. A worn bearing usually will leak at the seal...but a seal can get old and dry and start leaking also. The play, or lack of play will tell you.
WH656 9 #9 Posted May 9, 2020 (edited) EXCELLENT info here. I will be wiggling that shaft yo check for play. Figured I'd reply here.. Just watched a video on the TUBE explaining the replacement of WH axle seal (I have a 656). Someone in the reply thinks the gy put the seal on backward!? So let me try to draw a diagram here with my keyboard: Trans: |--------|----shaft----[ <--- seal <-- which direction does the seal go?? The guy on youtube had it in with the open side out where you can see the open part of the seal as you are placing it on the axle...if that makes sense.. Secondly, do you always need a puller to get the hubs off? Edited May 9, 2020 by WH656
stevasaurus 22,863 #10 Posted May 9, 2020 @WH656 put the Y-Tube URL in here so we can see. The open rubber faces in when you replace a seal...always! No, you do not always need a puller to pull off the hubs. Consider your self lucky when you don't. The scale goes from them falling off to cutting them off. No Kidding. WH656 9 #11 Posted May 16, 2020 Hub came right off :) Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRgBeRgXcy0 <-- about 7:40 in, it looks like its on like this [ Last question, on the 656 do you just put the seal in, fill and go? or is there some type of bleeding needed? stevasaurus 22,863 #12 Posted May 16, 2020 put the seal in, check the oil level. Add if needed, then , good to go. No bleeding.

stevasaurus 22,863 #16 Posted May 20, 2020 The guy in that video did put the seal in backwards. The rubber always goes in toward the trans.
