McGrew 460 #1 Posted May 2, 2020 Folks, a guy a few miles from me has a set of cast iron wheel weights for sale. The pictures show MTD cast into the weight, and the number 719-141. His price is reasonable IF they fit. I'm hoping they will fit the rear rims on my Raider 10. I have the plastic coated wheel weights, but don't like the fact they stick out of the rim several inches. I'd like to mount these on the inside of the rims if possible. Do any of you know if these MTD weights will fit? Is the size of wheel weights fairly standard? He is going to measure them tomorrow, and if his numbers sound right, I will go look at them. I may even take one of the wheels off the tractor to be sure. Is it a sacrilege to put MTD parts on a Wheel Horse? Thanks for any input! Danny
ebinmaine 67,309 #2 Posted May 2, 2020 Most cast wheel weights should fit the outside. But the inside is another story... Likely you'd have to measure the hole to be sure it'll fit over your hub.
WVHillbilly520H 10,373 #3 Posted May 3, 2020 @McGrew if they look like these Bolens cast weights they will definitely fit externally but you will need to measure the wheel hub OD and the weight ID to verify they will go over the hub when installed but also if they are too thick they will stick out past the wheel rim on the inside vs the deeper offset on the outside. I have IH/FARMALL/CUB Cub Cadet 25-30lb weights on the inside of my 520 wheels and Massy Ferguson split 35-45 lb on the outside hiding under wheel covers.
rjg854 11,351 #4 Posted May 3, 2020 No it's not sacrilege to run other model tractor weights. I have Sear's weights on a couple of my tractors. They were much cheaper than weights. Will they do the job? that's what's important 1
McGrew 460 #5 Posted May 3, 2020 Thanks guys! Pictures may be deceiving, but he shows them next to a set of plastic coated ones, and the center hole in the cast ones looks like it will pass Over the hub. Will know more tomorrow. Will keep you informed! Thanks! Danny
McGrew 460 #6 Posted May 3, 2020 Ok Guys, the weights have landed. They weigh 55 lbs each, and will fit inside or outside the rims. But now, I am torn on where to mount them... I see pro's and cons on both. Any advice you can give me? I plan to leave them on the tractor after cleaning and paint. I won't be removing them until its time for new tires. But that isn't that far in the future. But those 49 year old WH tires still hold air and don't leak! Danny
rjg854 11,351 #7 Posted May 4, 2020 If they don't hang outside the rims, I think I would put them on the inside so they wouldn't show. That's my

McGrew 460 #10 Posted May 4, 2020 Thanks for the input! I made a mistake when I said they would fit on the inside... The center hole is tapered, and I measured the larger side. So the weights will not pass over the hubs. I could remedy that with some lathe time, but will mount them on the outside and be done. Spent an hour or two cleaning the first one and putting on a coat of paint. Will post pics when done. Thanks again! Danny 1
McGrew 460 #11 Posted May 12, 2020 OK guys, the weights are mounted, and will be there for as long as possible. I mounted them in the wheels to avoid scratching up my fresh paint on the wheels and weights, and then bolted the wheels on. What a BEAR getting everything aligned, holding the wheels with one hand while starting the wheel bolts with the other! I guess I have a good reason to install wheel studs now... I'm pretty sure it was Eric that said Trina came up with the idea of using playing cards to aid in painting wheels with the tires still on. I owe you guys a beverage of your choice, as that is one of the best suggestions I have used in a very long time! The weights cleaned up nice, and the MTD casting just "washed" right off! I attached a couple of pics after I aerated the yard today. Danny 3

Those wheels look great!!!
