310-8 with a rectifier

Recommended Posts

johnnymag3

I  I was asked to start this thread here so here it goes......Not sure of why I have a regulator, or alternator in a 310-8?

Started working on a 310-8 redoing the wires as it was a rats nest. The original owner used anything he could find to fix the problem..

I thought this 1986 310-8 was an unregulated tractor, but it seems like it is not . There are 2 yellow wires coming out from the grass shroud to a regulator attached to the rear of my dash panel. do I have a stator? it appears the regulator was added to the dash..

looking for an answer here now....I was not able to get anywhere in the other thread. were I posted pics, peeled wires, took pictures etc.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

I also should mention again that the two yellow wires go to the regulator, AC+ and AC-

Use you multimeter on Ohms. Probe the jacketed wire on both side of the jacket.  then swap the probes.  one way should show open the other low resistance if it is a diode.

Sounds like your tractor's charging system has been upgraded to a 15 amp regulated system.

The 46863 spec number is correct for the 1986 310-8.

Take a look at this diagram and see if it looks the same.

Pay attention to the pto switches to the right of the battery. If they are the same we are getting close.

Let us know what you find.

Currently working on a better wiring diagram but not fininshed yet.

Added what I have so far to the above link as it is easier to look at.

The 310-8 does not have the idiot lights that are in the diagram. Just disregard to wiring to the circuit board connector from each switch. These tractors will work without the circuit board plugged in which is a great feature.

Will work on removing the circuit board wiring so we have a diagram representing then 310-8.

I will be working on the Horse this morning, thanks for all of the great info. I reviewed all of the diagrams, and it does appear that this machine has been upgraded to a Stator and a rectifier as you just mentioned. I will be checking my system with my DVOM and letting you kind folks the outcome.

thank you !!!!!:thanks:

Changed the file in the above link to the modified 15 amp system so you can download and print if needed.

Here is another shot that may help. The pto switches came be confusing without it.

It is also on this page as a pdf if you want to print or enlarge it.

Make site the regulator has a good ground wherever you mount it.  You may also want to switch to a newer style regulator and mount it in the blower housing for cooling.  Just my two cents.  Bill

Tractor is all done......entire harness complete. Engine has a stator ...as AC current was 9.7 to 14.7 depending on engine rpms.to the regulator. Thank you all for the info and extensive research you provide.

Harness is done and installed, covered with proper wire loom and zip tied as needed.... and the girl is happy...!!!!!

I did not take any of the harness, as it was a minimal one. The 310 -8 does not have a lot of wiring. I can take some and post them though, thanks....
