Yesterday's walk was a mountain across the street. Bill Merrill Mountain. 

 

We've been there a few times this year. Great hike. Nice view. Good calorie burn.

It's a definite here. 

I'm not sure it's an actual law when not hunting.  I do know the IFW Wardens WILL address you if seen in the woods without blaze orange ... whether hunting or not.

That's why I am not a fan of Sunday hunting in nj, deer season is from Sept to Feb it's a long enough season and you can get a deer in less than 15 minutes , give some time to others who enjoy the outdoors without having to worry about getting zinged by an arrow or bullet.

I agree, they are starting the same nonsense in PA.  I have no big issue with hunting, I did it for years, but the game and the people need a break as well.

Being retired and free to hunt during the  week, I am not a supporter of Sunday hunting either, but I do understand the Pa Game commissions concern with regard to the continually declining number of hunters and the resulting loss of revenue.     The Two Sunday hunts were added this year to increase opportunities for the working and school age hunters and hopefully add new hunters and increase revenue.    We shall see how this plays out.  Sunday is a hot button issue with farmers, anti-hunters and others that use the State Game Lands.

The fact is , the hunters  through Millions of dollars of license revenue (no tax dollars) has bought, paid for and manages  the 1.5 million  acres of State Game lands and 400 miles of trails  that are available for free use by hikers, bikers,  bird watchers, horse back riders, snowmobilers, 4 wheelers, and anti-hunters.

Some of the non-paying groups complain when their usage us restricted during certain times for safety reasons and to prevent damage to the trails.  I don't believe they have a clue of the money required  to maintain and protect the acreage and trails involved.  There have been movements in the past to charge fees for use of the game lands and they have always been voted down mainly because of objection from the hunters that bought the game lands.

 

Pa timber forests were decimated through clear cutting practices  in the 1920s and wild game was nearly extinct due to uncontrolled poaching and market hunters.

IMO, the establishment of the Game Commission saved these forests and the deer and turkey populations in the state.

I had a personal interest in restoring the wild turkey in Pa in the 1950s when the Game Commission realized their plan to pen raise and release wild turkey was not working. 

They ended this program and started the trapping and releasing of native wild birds in less populated areas across the state.

Many of these birds were trapped in my" back yard" in Southern Somerset Co.     The whitetail deer, black bear, and wild turkey is now thriving  in nearly every County of Pa. for all to enjoy.

Sorry for the speech,  But as some of you know, I have been hunting for 65 years and have walked thousands of miles over Pa, Md, WVa, and Montana and since being retired  I spend around 1/3 of my time hunting  the forests  of Pa. for deer and turkey.

BTW, I make no apologizes for the passion I have for hunting.  As a 12yo living in the Appalachian Mts, in 1956 it was for subsistence.  Today, every harvest is a religious experience.

@Ed Kennell I understand what you mean about the “religious experience” of taking game.  I thanked her last night for providing for my family before I cut her open.  You have to feel something while killing them.  It’s part of the whole thing.  Also while thanking her aloud, I pat her on the head.  Mainly to make sure she was dead though!

 The deceased buck that was lying down the track was removed yesterday. Taken to a nearby farm where a grave was dug and his body laid to rest.

After tearing my Dakota down last weekend for a head change out. I was unable to get it back together last weekend but I made good head way today. I should be back up & running tomorrow.

Nice write up there Ed K. Back in the early eighties when I lived in CT we went to visit a shipmate who moved back to his native PA. We drove a road named 209, lots of truck traffic,  if I remember right and there were road killed deer every half mile it seemed. The shipmate had a place out in the boonies and to sit on his porch viewing wildlife was amazing.

That section of 209 was nicknamed Ho Chi Ming Trail.  You will be glad to know that commercial trucks are now forbidden and it is a pleasant drive, except for an occasional idiot.  I use it as a shortcut going to the northeast, it might be a little slower with the 45 MPH speed limit, but well worth it.

Spent a pleasant day at the lathe turning down a pair of brake discs to suit a racing buggy for a friend.

Cast iron all over the place.

Also cleaned up the flywheel and shaft tapers on my K301 ready to rebuild when the key steel arrives.

I've had a nightmare my friend.

 

Started with some kind of misfire or kickback. Then really bad running.

I though it might be carb or ignition.

Turned out to be the flywheel coming loose and shearing the drive key, thus throwing the timing all to cock.

Im on with rebuilding the whole top end and making a new throttle shaft for the carb as the original is badly worn. 

Poor little Fred, he is in the Emergency room and not going anywhere soon.
