Razorback

Yesterday I replaced the passenger-side ball joints on our 1981 Ford Bronco..... today, while I had the ball joint press, I replaced the axle pivot bushings in each half of the front axle.

Alignment shop said the driver's side ball joints are tight, but I have not checked them myself..... I need to do that.....

John Coffey ( like coffee, only spelled different ), says his name was J-A-N-G-L-E-S... :laughing-rolling:

Southern spelling...

If John Coffey says it's Jangles, it's Jangles. I'm not arguing with him.:angry-nono:

I spent 15 hours today power washing, scraping, scrubbing, grinding, buffing, sanding, cleaning, and totally destroying my garage. What a mess:chores-mop: That's what happens when you do a complete tear down. Everything has to be cleaned, sorted, bagged and tagged, lest I forget where it goes. :confusion-confused: I will probably spend another 15 hours tomorrow, and possibly, the day after that, but all the parts will be CLEAN and ready for paint. Unless I decide to take some parts to the media blaster. I already have 35 pieces up there from a few other non tractor related projects, and have no idea when I will get them back,:confusion-waiting:  Speaking of paint, I got some new toys today. I have no idea how this will work out, but as they say, God hates a coward. I'm sure he's not big on fools either, but I thought I would give it a try anyway. Never used one of these before, I'm not sure I have even seen one before, now I have one.

20211108_170838.jpg.5d19e3a89319c922f4a92b5def72508b.jpgHarbor Freight. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. I ordered what my nephew told me to get. I'm sure there will be a trial and error period on some less conspicuous pieces. I do have a question though. For those of you that spray single stage paint, is it OK to use rattle can primer? I can't find on the can where it say enamel,  or anything else.20211108_173517.jpg.f70705c9be6910e692410ec26daae642.jpg "USE PAINT THINNER TO CLEAN" if that tells you anything.  Thanks  Greg

Whenever you intermix paint brands (especially aerosol cans) it's a crap shoot. All you can do is try a small piece first. Use a dedicated wax and grease remover, not thinner or reducer. Thinner and reducers can soften or reactivate the existing paint or primer (unless its bare) but they also leave residue on the parts. The only thing a body shop uses thinner for any more is clean-up use ( cleaning guns, wiping off overspray, etc).

Not sure what you are painting but I was taught that etch primer was just used in a light coat to give the metal some tooth for better adhesion on bare metal. I then follow up with a primer that is thicker and you can sand out imperfections before top coating.  I have sprayed urethane catalyed paint over rattle can primer before but you will want to do a test panel.   I use a two part primer 99% of the time though

Every time I see that I drool on myself… :bow-blue:

Remind me again… what brand house paint did he use and how thick was the nap on the roller…?

I have used this primer for the last several years on just about everything. I like the way it covers, and the way it dries. I have top coated with rattle can enamel, and Lacquer. With clear coat on top. So far I've had no problems. This is my first attempt at using a spray gun with single stage paint. Might work, might not, we will see,

Today started at 6 AM with the cat hacking up a hairball ! Left the house at 9 AM to turn in license plates on a car I sold . Stood in line for 1 1/2 hours at local DMV. Finally get in building explain to clerk I want to turn in license plates. I get a ticket with a number (#e 250) and told to go sit down. ( o crap) 20 minutes later get to the window. Takes clerk about 25 minutes to accept the plates. Next stop is the bank where I deposit  check , cash and change  into my account. Ole prune face teller takes 30 minutes to handle my deposit. Finally get home at noon and almost stepped on another hairball. Ate lunch and then started changing motor and vac unit from a Tac Vac trailer to one that hangings on 310-8. One on 310-8 has carb problem ( I don't do well with carbs) Only takes 45 minutes to to remove both units and put ole reliable B& S unit ( has not been run on 2 years) on the 310-8 after oil change and new E 3 plug starts up on second pull . Take rest of day off , take a shower around 4:30 pm , get out of shower only to step on cat claw on bath room rug which gets stuck in my foot.. Now wearing a band aide and thinking real hard about going to bed.

The paint was the cheapest thing I could find at the local discount / resale shop, had to add a lot of water as it was almost dried up. No roller, I prefer a straw wisk broom.:D

So far all I've seen from you is awesome work. You'll find that I don't like to criticize the work that people do, unless I'm paying them to do it. Now, if you want advise on how to do some thing. I'm more than happy to give you pointers.

I've used the self etching primer that you posted a picture of many times, fact there is a can or 2 in my shop. It seems to get along with various other primers and paints. Like stated above self etching primer is designed to eat into bare metal to promote adhesion of a filler primer or paint.

Take your time learning your new spray gun, like you said start with pieces that aren't conspicuous. It takes some practice to get a nice medium wet coat with out getting runs.

After a day like that, you may want to consider a drink before bed. Hope tomorrow goes better.

@Gregor I gotta agree with @Achto here.

Your work efforts are clearly top notch and your generosity of knowledge AND parts is equal.

That process here goes much faster. I turn them into birdhouses roofs. They are the perfect size.
