Stormin 9,981 #2976 Posted September 4, 2021 Been helping lay out the plots for a ploughing match we're holding next Sunday. We've been unable to hold it at our usual venue and it's taken some time to find another one. We're hoping for at least 40 entries to break even. Usually have around 60. Won't be entering myself, as with the long dry spell the ground is quite hard. My plough would just about scratch the surface. 1

Pullstart 62,870 #2981 Posted September 5, 2021 A few pics from my Aunt… the customer. the precast installed… starting the block install after the granite company laid the countertop… Near completion yesterday, after setting the grill signing the last block “FJ Platte Services, ‘21”. That is my grandpa’s name, her dad. We were a bit choked up for that picture! When I roughed in the power, water and gas from the house, that job is what landed me Poppy’s new shoes.

Horse Newbie 7,069 #2984 Posted September 5, 2021 So a recently retired friend from work needed the ceiling of his front porch replaced...house built in 1936 ... not a square corner to be found.... Real 2x4 dimensional framing lumber though... I about choked to death on the dust tearing out the old ceiling... Check out what must be the original wiring... cloth covered wires strung through porcelain insulators..and look at that porch light socket ! Didn't finish today...back at it tomorrow... 4 1

Stop at your local supplier and get a decent respirator and set of safety glasses. Seriously. Your health is work the $75. May even want to get a single-use tyvek suit. rjg854 11,361 #2987 Posted September 5, 2021 Knob and tube wiring, I've seen that in a few of our remodeling jobs. Must have been fairly decent for it's time, seeing you still find it being used and the places haven't burned down.

Not sure what type of wire was used but it didn't look like copper.
Lee1977 6,659 #2989 Posted September 5, 2021 (edited) The question was " What did you do to day" I took a few pictures. The Eddleman mower was finished a couple weeks back. Ran out of black paint, I used some old paint I had on the tank and it came off when I filled the tank. I can't used the cart as I don't have any lawn level enough as It doesn't have brakes, but I painted it anyway. It was copper...in 1936 they weren't using aluminium wire yet were they ? It had insulation...made of some kind of cloth... I imagine around 1936 they had as many houses catch fire in the kitchen and fireplaces as they did wiring. It also had no ground ! Horse Newbie 7,069 #2992 Posted September 6, 2021 So I went back today to work on front porch ceiling ...first order of business...put in a electrical junction box at the closest piece of naked wire. I did put some old fuel line around the old house wiring where the cable clamps were. Then run Romex to the new fixture box. After that we installed the rest of the ceiling... Tomorrow we will make our best attempt at putting crown molding around the perimeter.

Not a "bad" system per se, but the insulation is aging out, and it can be problematic to see trouble areas where loose fill insulation has been blown in attics. Since the line and neutral are separated, as long as someone doesn't disturb it, you'll likely never have fire issues with it, even if it is bare. I tear it out of roughly 2 old houses a month. Speaking of full dimension 2x4's.. The house I just bought was said to have been built in 1923.. but it has a couple of K&T insulators in the attic and full dimension 2x4's. I'm thinking more like 1933! 7 hours ago, Lee1977 said: I have seen it done without any insulation. Not sure what type of wire was used but it didn't look like copper. It had insulation to start out with. The wire is nickel clad copper, which is why it was the wrong color. Helps with corrosion. Gregor 4,846 #2994 Posted September 6, 2021 Fishing isn't great but a pretty morning anyway. Tip When taking two 12 yo girls fishing, don't take a pole for yourself. You won't have time for it anyway. 1 1
Horse Newbie 7,069 #2995 Posted September 6, 2021 I finished up the porch ceiling I was doing for a friend- with pay...the house was so out of square we ended up using 2x4's to trim around the perimeter. Then we used 11/16ths quarter round at the top of the 2x4's. Not perfect by far, but he was well pleased, and the 2 foot round hole where it had rotted is gone...he'll be hiring someone else to paint it.
Pullstart 62,870 #2996 Posted September 6, 2021 I finished making Norman even more capable, squeezing a 5th wheel around the turnover ball gooseneck setup. To top it off, my buddy has a 16k hitch he said he’ll swap me for my 14k. I’ll be dragging a 5th wheel to Daytona this month, along with picking up another trailer soon. 4
Stormin 9,981 #2997 Posted September 7, 2021 Quick repair job on one of the farm trailers this morning, ready for the combine this afternoon. Harvesting barley. Back home and secured another escape hole in the hedge the pup had found. Think we should rename her Houdini.

Achto 27,571 #2999 Posted September 8, 2021 Trying to use up the spoils of my small garden, before it spoils that is. Tonight I made some spicy tomato chutney and some hot pepper relish. The pepper relish is extremely spicy hot, but has really good flavor 4 2
