Had to do some reconstruction on our IH 4700 today.. The floor in this truck was getting pretty soft. 

 

Here is a pic of the right side of the truck after I cut the rusted floor panels out.

 

Rocker panels were also in bad shape. After a little tin knocking I was able make some new rockers out of some 16ga.

 

 

 

New floors in & welded in place.

My brother still has a ways to go to finish the truck, but yes the goal is to have it ready to roll by Thurs.

 

I am not a flux core fan, but I would recommend that little Harbor Freight welder to anyone.

   Today I decided it was time, as the pond has dried up, to de-reed the edges before they encroached any further. Hot work pulling the things out and after four hours as the sun came round, decided to call it a day. The Sears and Saxon trailer were brought into play, transporting seven full loads down the bridleway for disposal.

 

 

 

 

 

  I'll tackle the rest on Wednesday, as up at the farm tomorrow.

Working on the walls now. 1 1/2" foam board between the purlins and then cover that with plywood underlayment.

 @Achto  what size wire and what welder settings were you using for that sheet met as work?  I'm still blundering around trying to find a happy spot for sheet metal on my Linclon power pack.  Were you pushing the bead or dragging it?

 

What did I do today?  Not what was originally planned.  The brick mason we were expecting last week canceled out because he was short of labor and was struggling to keep up with the bigger jobs than mine.  Bummer.  Guess I'm going to have to keep bugging him now - probably a weekly call.

 

Instead of messing with bricks on the front porch project, I finished sticking the new floor tiles down in the kitchen last week.

 

We have now switched over to building a HO train layout for the KATY Museum.  Played with sketches and track placement on the 4x8 sheet we were planning on using.  Well, things didn't quite work out - not enough room.  So, back to the museum to do more measuring.  Looks like we can go to 5x9, which gives a chance to do what we want.  A trip to the local box store for more materials - man plywood is EXPENSIVE!  Got the tables built tonight.  Will start laying track tomorrow.

 

My circular saw had died earlier this year.  To replace it, I picked up a 5 1/4" Black & Decker battery powered saw - it runs on the same battery pack as the other battery tools I've got.  Runs quietly, cuts well, but hard for a lefty like me to see where the blade is cutting.  It really needs a led to light up the working area of the blade.  I was impressed that it came with a carbide tipped blade.

Crikey its hot here!  We are not used to this kind of silly weather. If you want it warm go abroad lol.

Managed to cut the verges and green before it got too warm this morning. 

Been repairing a cylinder mower for a guy. Really needed sharpening but he didn't want to spend money on that. He took it to a tool shop who said they would sharpen it for him for 20 quid.

All they did was run a dremel over it, not even touching the cutting edges. At least the work I did is right.

With the 16ga metal that I was welding I had this welder temp set on "C" and the wire speed around "4"  dragging the bead for stitch welding with .030 flux core. For the blind welds (spot welds), I turned the heat up to "D" and the wire speed up to "4 1/2 to 5". If you find that you are starting to burn through, back your gun away from the material a little bit until you find a sweet spot.

Oops!  Just bought two old mowers off ebay.  Big old things that are spares or repair.

One has a kohler engine with an oil filter so looks a serious bit of kit.

Two of them virtually the same but other has a kubota engine and what looks like a car gear box fitted to it!

 

It cost me £50 for the pair, and only 37 miles away. 

Wife is in stormy mood....

  Not needed at the farm so finished in the pond this morning.

 

 Left some reeds. Some to hide my wood yard a bit and some where there is a willow.

 

 

  Took away three more loads. That makes ten in total. I wouldn't have thought that many when I started.

 

 Last load before lunch.

 

  Now to find a shady spot to relax in out of the sun.

Well... I did it.  I gave my employer my RETIREMENT notice today!  As of August 6th I will be among the ranks of the fully retired.

 

Thirty Two years at that job!  Gone in the wink of an eye.

 

You youngsters take note of three things:

 

1.  SAVE SAVE SAVE as much money as you can afford NOW!  If you do you will be able to retire early and not wait till you're old.

 

2. TAKE CARE OF YOUR TEETH!  RELIGIOUSLY!  You're going to need them for a LONG TIME!

 

3. BUY the BEST MATTRESS you can afford!  You spend 1/3 of your life there, might as well be comfortable!

 

That's all you need to know.
