What did you do today?

I sold a GT 1142 with an M12 swapped into it to a neighbor.  He just bought his first house, and now his first tractor.  He used to be a mechanic before he became a cop, so he'll take good care of it. Had to start him out right, couldn't let him buy a "tractor" from home depot.  Bill

Try a different brand of lamps.  Keep trying until you find one that doesn't interfere.  Sadly, there really isn't much else you can do.

Outside antenna maybe?  I'm guessing here.  I'm a retired mechanical engineer, not a sparkly.

I have thought about an outside antenna, but I have a small radio, not like a receiver you would have on a home stereo...

I am thinking if I took it apart I wouldn't know how/ where to hook up the antenna wires ( no screws on the back of radio )

The interior design department wanted an industrial looking light fitting for our kitchen.

Have you seen the price of those things?

So the "I can knock one of those up" department had a go and came up with this...

Scaffolding tube and fittings with a few coolie hat down lights and some bits of industrial decoration.

I've begun to realize that my "heck, I can do that..." comments are starting to cause me a lot of trouble--usually adding to my project backlog or biting off more than I should oughta.

I have the small 8 ft long fluorescent...do you mean different bulbs or different fixtures ?

FM radio?  Presume that it's got a whip antenna on it?  The problem with adding an external antenna jack is basically one of impedance matching.  You sorta need an electronics degree to perform that modification.

Can you solder wires / printed circuit boards?

You have interference from a fluorescent?  it must be a newer one then with the 'electronic ballast' because the old ones with the 'transformer ballast' rarely caused interference more than a foot or two away.

The electronic ballasts also have switch mode power supplies in them and can cause the same issues.

I meant the entire fixture, not just the bulb.  The bulb isn't what's causing the interference, it's the electronics that is driving that bulb.

I've actually had pretty good luck with the Harbor Freight LED 5000 Lumen lamps.  I bought ONE to test and went back and bought several more because they were 'relatively' OK.  They only wiped out the radio if they were within 2-3 feet of the antenna.

Does reception improve when you shut off the LED lights?  The ones I installed are horrendous RFI producers if the antenna is too close to them.

LED lamps do definitely affect FM reception sometimes in weird ways.. I have been having that problem in shop since I switched from fluorescent to LED bulbs. Interestingly enough it affects one unit but not another one. The Mcintosh solid state tuner is totally not affected  but in a way I am not surprised since although its over 50 years old  they are still what tuners are judged by. The tube Scott however is basically disabled on half of the dial but with LED lights catching some obscure stations it did not before. Reception totally improves with lights off.

No surprise there!  That's certainly one of the 'gold standards', but I bet there are some fixtures out there that would wipe that out too.

The problem is that if the RF interference is on the SAME frequency as the station you are trying to receive, there is NO radio that will be able to reject it.

CHEAP radios have little sheilding or 'selectiviity' and thus an LED lamp that emits RFI over a broad range of frequencies (as they do) even if the offending RFI is on a DIFFERENT frequency the cheap radios will be affected.

In that case, you are most likely SOL!  If it were even possible with your radio, you would need some rudimentary knowledge of printed circuit board technology to think about it.  Anything is POSSIBLE ... there are devices that you could add inside your radio to 'match' them to an external antenna, but chances are pretty good that you might not be successful and end up with a radio that doesn't work at all!  :(

For a somewhat technical discussion of RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) here's an article that explains it:

I believe the problem is more that the manufacturers pay no attention to the fact that they need to provide FILTERING and apply proper design practice.  I doubt it has anything to do with a 'voltage regulator'.

Those bulbs all have tiny little 'switch mode power supplies' in them, and SMPS are NOTORIOUS for producing RFI if not carefully designed.

By the way, don't be at all surprised when your "Battery Tender" charger does the same thing!  Cheap ones are worse but even the name brand ones cause issues.

The manufacturers just don't care.

Here are two LED lamps, one has a regulator and the other only uses resistors to control voltage.  The regulated one cannot be used anywhere near a TV.

Stepney

Local friend called me out to check out his newly purchased Harry Ferguson. 'Recently restored'.
"Ran rough" he said..
After barely getting it going enough to move, it was billowing flames from the carb and exhaust.. timing was about 30* ATDC.. AFTER..
Points were way out, as was the timing, tank carb and lines full of junk.. how he actually got it on a trailer is beyond me.
Got her dialed in nice though.

Sitting in the pouring rain trying to get it going, took a few minutes to figure out how the starter worked.. used to the old Ford 8n button near the dash, or same on the Massey.. I think?
His wife came out and explained the shift lever was also the starter.. That's a new one for me.
Got it going good now, not charging, and the hydraulics don't work at all..

Last weekend we bought the carcass of a Ford 9N for $300 to use as a parts tractor as we fix up Tasha’s little 2N. While I was at work today she pulled all the external pieces off of the engine, then after work I was able to get ahold of our landlord’s little John Deere with loader and we made short work of removing the engine. The little 2N does run, but it’s getting pretty tired and has a very slight lower end knock, my plan is to overhaul this engine, and have it ready to install on the tractor, that way we can still use the tractor throughout the summer to mow with and any other chores we need it for. We also discovered a Sherman Step Up transmission in the parts unit as we were splitting it, that may find its way into her tractor as well

Large parts could be a problem, but if there’s any small parts you need let me know. There’s gonna be a lot of it that we don’t use, anything you need that’s small enough to ship I’d be glad to send your way.

Main thing we wanted off of it was the engine, air breather, and upper transmission/steering sector housing. And of course the Sherman after we discovered it lol

Had a busy day for a Saturday.

Couple of new guests came for a trial visit to see how they take to living with us, and if the owners like what they see.

Then I spent a couple of hours building a locking bar for the garage personnel door. I wanted something that looks too intimidating to even try to tackle.

Its box section but there is a solid steel bar wedged and welded inside the sliding member to beef it up.

The sliding shackle padlock goes right through this bar so its pretty bomb proof.

Bolted through the concrete panels there are large fish plates on the inside to spread the load and prevent it being jemmied off.
