Trina went out the back door with the dog yesterday afternoon in broad daylight. The red arrow points to our new forest access path. There were a minimum six deer standing there checking over the work site. 😅

When we were having site prep work done for our house the deer always congregated each morning checking it out. They have a pathway near the edge of the forest behind the house where we see several passing by most days. Love seeing them but the are a bit of a PITA when they eat out flowers in spring and summer. Oh well, guess that is the price we pay for living in their space.

Being turned into lunch might just be the price they ought to pay for eating your flowers!  That, or helping pay the property tax, lol.

Yesterday afternoon wife and I were bringing in firewood when we heard a big boom in front of the house.  Mixed in with that boom was the sound of a speeding car and other sounds.  Went out front and found a mangled 3 point buck and enough broken plastic to fill a trash can.  No cars stopped and each one just smashed the plastic into small bits.  I went straight to my Amish neighbor knowing he would make the best use of the deer and he immediately dragged it home.  Upon further investigation I found the deer tracks and another crash scene, apparently the buck was struck in front of my other house and recovered only to be taken out by the next idiot.  Men, women, children, deer, groundhogs, cows and any other living creature doesn't stand much of a chance with the current crop of idiot drivers.  I should note that I live along a straight road where you can see 1/4 mile in each direction.

 

More on cows; less than a month ago the Amish cow next door escaped the fence and crossed the road and took a considerable hike, all of the Amish in the area were away at a holiday party, so we had to rescue the runaway bovine.  A young couple and the FedEx guy saw the issue and stopped to help, all other drivers were pissed and pushed right thru as we were guiding the cow to the only gate and back home.  So my wife and I are risking our lives on the road saving a cow that doesn't belong to us and making the road safe again while taking blasts from horns, middle fingers and such abuse.

I think they are after the buds on the tree tops. Back in my youth and wood burning years and good health I always cut my firewood in the winter. My ten acre lot was full of maple and the deer loved the tops. They know when they hear a chain saw good eating is to be had.

My street speed limit is 25 MPH but I guess that's only a suggestion as idiots go 40 and above. We had an A-hole that lived up the road go by the house in a blur with a souped up S-10.

I’m waiting for the next idiot who routinely blows through the stop sign by my house on a fairly blind corner, to get t-boned into my front lawn or house. A car is pretty light, but when it’s dump trucks, and semi’s, moving along quick I get a bit nervous. People don’t drive for the surroundings. For example, if you can’t see well don’t do 60.

I saw that news article about folks up there who were getting vehicles IN their house. 

Brilliant DOT can't even be bothered to install a 4 way stop or other enforcement.

I also live at a T intersection of a main county road and a gravel side road.

Traffic on the main road is supposed to be 80 KPH (50MPH) but cars do well over that.

 

Cars rarely stop coming out of the gravel road and I am amazed that there has not been a major accident there in the 33 years I have lived here.

Many close calls and a few cars in the ditch with one of them flipping over but no actual collisions.

It’s closer than it looks. That hasn’t happened yet, but I have had a car on the curb years ago when the weather was nasty out. My parents who live next door have gone to the town. They presented their case at a town meeting but apparently it’s a DOT road and it sounds like they’re waiting for injuries or a death before doing anything. The road was posted 25 for years but the signs were removed for some reason I forget what. Since then there’s been a few close calls. Most of the time the cars in houses it seems to be elderly people who could use supervision as there’s issues cognitively.

Same here, the only time I see them stop if it’s at night or another car is coming. The Dump trucks etc… is worse though all that weight and they stop slower to just do the same speed and judgement calls as the cars.

I took my 3rd call out for a roll-back at a local tow company. It's been giving them various transmission issues and they are lost on the diagnosis, so I've been going up to look at it, and each time it's something different.

 

The long and short of it seems to be they mis-diagnosed it the first time, before I got involved, their guy who was doing the actual work kept breaking other things, and now all of his mis-steps have been repaired and I was able to look at the original issue and tell them what I think they should try next.

A teacher neighbor asked me to help her with a team of 5th graders trying a Destination Imagination project.

There were only 4 students but my esteem for teachers dealing with whole classrooms full of this age group went up several notches.

These youngster have a LOT of knowledge and boundless ideas but they are so in need of guidance in how to frame a problem so it can be solved and then work through possible solutions. It was a tiring two hours but I saw glimmers of progress.

In the last week, I started from our Mo. location, drove to our MI. location to check the house and empty the PO box, then returned to Mo. by way of out Ky.  Logged about 1700 miles.  Swapped vehicles in MI. and delivered dome things to our son in Ky.  Also tinkered with the projects we have going in our Ky. 20 acre wood.  Pulled the carb and distributor off of E J the 8n for rebuild this winter.

 

Adding to the driver comments about not driving with considerations.  On the way to MI. I ran into some lake effect snow after dark - about 100 miles of it.  The roads were not terrible, but they had a light covering of snow.  Temps were below zero, so salt was not working.  The snow was light and powdery, with enough wind to keep it moving around.  Comfortable driving speed for me was about 45mph.  Comfortable driving speed for many semis, however seemed to be between 50 and 60mph, producing an instant whiteout of blowing snow when they passed.  Today on my way to Mo., while I was in the fast lane in line behind a slower car or truck making a pass, I had a few semis running well over the speed limit charge up uncomfortably close behind me.

 

I've got to wonder what those drivers are thinking.  Yes, I understand they have a delivery window to make.  Yes, I understand that conserving momentum is part of driving a truck.  Yes, I understand that 80,000 pounds of truck and cargo probably have better traction than my minivan or pickup.  Yes, I know that truck drivers deal with smaller vehicles doing unpredictable and dumb things everyday.  But, I've got to believe that a driver can see a slow traffic ahead situation developing in time to not use up cushion space before slowing down. 

 

I'm also convinced that some drivers of any type of vehicle think that tailgating the last vehicle in a slow line of vehicles will somehow make the slow guy in the front of the line speed up.  I'll pull into the slow lane, if it is clear, and let the next guy in the fast lane worry about the tailgater.

 

I'm finished with my  now.

Inconsiderate. Unprofessional. Just plain poor drivers. 

 

As a Professional Commercial Driver that kind of behavior from truckers is inexcusable and should be accountable.
