Mickwhitt 4,605 #7354 Posted November 5 Been keeping an eye on the election. Can't say the system makes any sense to me at all, this college thing just looks pointless? Why have people vote and then have someone else vote on their behalf? I know it came from way back when, but communication is better now so it's not really necessary is it? When I wake up in 8 hours time there may be news, I certainly won't be staying up to watch the results as the come in from 3am our time.
rjg854 11,356 #7355 Posted November 5 The purpose of the Electorial College is so every State has a say in the election process. Popular vote process would nullify the smaller States compared to the largest States. Simply stated.
wallfish 16,994 #7356 Posted November 5 And not just states but huge rural areas of multiple states. Without the electoral college we would all be at the whim of a few large cities and states to whatever they decide is right for them. That may (probably) isn't right for everyone else.

I took today off for voting purposes, then decided to participate in the "early voting" (PA's system is screwy) a few weeks ago, so I made sure the wife was able to leave early to get in line early. I'm told our polling place was a madhouse today.

Handy Don 12,201 #7361 Posted November 6 Read a book. Took care of some paperwork. Did some research on a couple of projects. Had a nice phone conversation with @Tractorhead. Went out to dinner with my spouse. Studiously avoided the news and ignored the “did you vote yet?" phone calls from candidates--thanking Caller ID. I voted early last week. 1
Mickwhitt 4,605 #7362 Posted November 6 All over bar the shouting as we say. Pretty convincing result so there should be no big delays in transferring from one administration to the next. All we can do is watch and wait, and hope of course. I really thought that Harris had done enough, but it seems not. The level of discontent with the previous administration must have been significant. We are in the same boat over here, no one really wanted a labour government, but they were sick and tired of the conservatives with their snouts in the trough. Now it is Labour with their snout in the same trough... Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Onward America, the die is cast, I hope that the future pans out well for you. Sparky-(Admin) 21,314 #7364 Posted November 6 I did this a couple days ago…rented an e-bike. Very fun and covered a lot of ground with it. Didnt get anywhere near the exersize benefits of my regular bike though. Maybe I used the battery too much? Clobbered the battery in 1 hour and 45 minutes. Rode around and into Diamond Head, then buzzed through a bunch of high-end neighborhoods before heading back to the hotel (in the small red circle) 2 1
Handy Don 12,201 #7365 Posted November 6 (edited) Morning coffee interrupted by a very loud crash upstairs that sounded like fallen furniture and broken glass followed by loud thumping. Went up to find one of the front bedrooms had a 2' x 4.5’, Therma-pane window smashed in including a wrecked screen. Rocking chair knocked over. Glass everywhere. Huh? Branch? Rock? Meteorite? I edged carefully into the room, avoiding the scattered glass, to take some pictures and try to figure out what happened. Then, up from the corner at the foot of the bed stands -- A FULL GROWN WILD TURKEY! I didn’t even take a picture, I was so startled I just backed out of there and shut the door fast. Thankfully it found its own way back out after about 15 minutes through the broken window, but it left behind a few feathers, goodly amount of blood on the walls and windowsill--and no other deposits, whew. So this afternoon cleaned up lots of broken glass and blood. The fellow that we use for carpet cleaning had a fortuitous opening this afternoon so that’s getting done. Also fortunate that Anderson still stocks replacement sashes for our 40+ year old casement windows (cost is breathtaking but shipping is free 😉). Last job will be a temporary cover for the window until the replacement arrives. What a day. Edited November 6 by Handy Don 1 1

Experimental low tech Russian drone, you need to inform homeland security. Short range, big enough for a decent payload, camouflaged perfectly. Just a few issues with guidance.

adsm08 2,046 #7374 Posted November 9 Got up early today and ran to the other location of the company I work for to borrow a special tool that my shop is lacking. Found I needed it near the end of the day yesterday. Then I went home and rearranged the garage. I'd decided I wanted my tool box back where it used to be, which meant pulling everything out and moving the lift out of where I had it stashed. I cannot wait to get this new garage up. I know it will probably still be this time next year before the lift can actually be installed, but the extra space will be so nice.
