Mickwhitt 4,606 #6901 Posted June 16 Spent the last 7 days in Menorca on holiday. Surprisingly a lot of American history on the island from naval days. Apparently you chaps declared war on us Brits a few years ago and buggered off to Menorca because we wouldn't let you play in Gibraltar. There is a cemetery where around twenty American sailors are buried and other things of interest like admiral David Farragutt, the US navy's first ever admiral. There's a statue of him in ciutadella as his dad was born there in the 1700s. I heard a few American accents so there are some cruise ship passengers looking round. Finally we saw a lovely American registered sailing yacht, the Kaori, which does charters all over the world. Sleeps 8 people so if a few folk club together they could afford the $ 155,000 a week charter fee! Home tomorrow so we will be back to the wettest year on record so far.
Tractorhead 9,064 #6903 Posted June 17 Spent now 2 Day‘s in New York. Today‘s pedestrial trip was very long and very time consuming. i go in strong Steps but i dunno How much Miles that was. felt i would say 20-30 at least.... I was today at the 9/11 Memorial. A even sadly and truly emotional Place also for me. spent pair of Dollars in the Donation Box. After that, i do an turn into the wrong way and go directly to New yorkCity Hall. here i decided i could take a look also at China Town what where followed by the Lower East side. On delancy Street i go back to SoHo,than i decide to go back to Broadway to Washington Square Arch. if i spotted anything that catches my eyes i went there. So i run few routes twice. Greenwich Village, Broadway, Madison Square Park, Empire State Building, New York Public Library, Times Square, St.Patricks Cathedral, and rockefeller center and at least via Crysler Building back to Grand Central Station. My Feet now glows, but i spotted felt 100 cool Pictures that‘s worthy all the Pain i will maybe tomorrow have. 1 5 2

8ntruck 6,998 #6906 Posted June 20 (edited) Looks like you are having quite the time in your New York tour, @Tractorhead. About the only thing I recognize in your pictures is the Gorge Washington bridge. Today, I worked on my 20 up Honda outboard. All last season, it would fire right up, run for about 15 or 20 seconds, then stall. It then acted like it was not getting any gas to re-start. Would crank forever. Once it warmed up, all was fine. I finally took to keeping a can of carb cleaner on board, as it would fire right up with a shot of cleaner into the intake. The dealer where I stored the boat last winter took a look and said all was good. I suspect that they did not look very hard at the problem. I started by checking the fuel pump - good strong spurts out of the gas line when pulling the rope starter. There was some crud in a drain line on the bottom of the carb, so I blew that clear. There is some sort of cylindrical device between the fuel pump and carb, said to be some device to prevent vapor lock. The interweb says to remove this thing and empty all the fluid from it. The gas smelling fluid I dumped out looked pretty muddy. I put a new set of plugs in the engine, and installed a new gas filter. It was starting OK, but it had warmed up. We will see tomorrow. There are supposedly some very small and critical passages in the enrichment and idle circuits in this carb. If they are dirty, bad things happen. It is said that these passages don't clean easily, either. There are emissions related limiters on the adjustments as well. A new carb is somewhere between $300 and $500. Service rates at the Honda marine dealer are $135ish per hour. Diagnostic time, carb swap time, and parts at the dealer would probably be $750 to $1000. If today's work does not solve the problem, I guess I'll have to keep searching the web for ideas and trying other things. This will mean we will have to haul the pontoon in and out of the lake multiple times, as I refuse to do fuel system work with the boat in the lake. Besides, when I drop a part or tool, chances of finding it on land are several quantum levels higher than trying to find it in the lake. 8ntruck 6,998 #6907 Posted June 20 Put the pontoon in the lake today. Yesterday's work did not solve the starting issue. Still had to give it a shot of carb cleaner to get it going. Once it warmed up, it ran great. I'm pretty sure the problem is in the enrichment circuit in the carb.
adsm08 2,046 #6908 Posted June 20 I finished a transmission that I've been working on for 3 weeks. Then I started building the next transmission. Found out we were shorted one of the first parts I need for assembly, so tomorrow maybe I get to to start the engine replacement I've had hanging for a while.

Handy Don 12,206 #6910 Posted June 21 Wandered around the BS trying not to buy stuff I thought was cool but really, really, really don’t need or have space for! I saw a LOT of tires and wheels being hauled away and I saw a couple of tractors change hands. Not quite as many sellers today but maybe there will be more tomorrow. Admired (and should have grabbed a picture of) a very large squirrel cage blower running off a 10 hp motor cooling off one group of sellers! 5

8ntruck 6,998 #6912 Posted June 22 (edited) @SylvanLakeWH are those reserved seats out in your shop? Update on the Honda outboard saga. Still needed a shot of carb cleaner to get it going yesterday. Once warmed up, it ran well - that's why I'm thinking enrichment circuit is cruddy (this thing does not have a conventional choke - emissions related?). Think I'll do a @Pullstart trick and dump a 1/2 cup of transmission fluid into the 3 gallon fuel tank. Maybe I'll get lucky and that will dislodge some crud. adsm08 2,046 #6914 Posted June 22 (edited) Went to the show looking for a tractor. Didn't find one I wanted for sale. Had some nice conversations with @Tractorhead , @Blasterdad and @wallfish, then went and bought a boat instead. Edited June 22 by adsm08 1 1

We have been looking for one that can comfortably take us and the kids out for a few years.

Fire up the outboard and just tow it back and forth through the yard. Might be hard to get the cut height set at first. Edited June 23 by adsm08

8ntruck 6,998 #6925 Posted June 30 (edited) The folks across the street were trading out an ancient concrete paving block patio. Their grandson brought his miniature MF tractor with a FEL and backhoe. While he had it running, he was nice enough to move about 3 out of 5 yards of 2" screen rock down the hill to the landscaping fabric under my deck project. I drew the manual labor of spreading the rocks around. Once I got the rocks distributed, I got another couple of joists installed. Took the pontoon out for a cruise tonight. Fired right off after a couple of cranks, then died about 10 seconds later. A couple shots of carb cleaner got it going. I've added a 1/2 cup of ATF to the 2 1/2 gallons of fuel in the tank. I'm thinking that a daily cold start followed by 10 minutes of idling will give the ATF mix time to work in the enrichment and idle circuits. If I don't see any improvement with this tank of fuel, I'll try something else - probably a carb rebuild. Edited July 1 by 8ntruck
